The US now has pretty well the same number of cases in total as Spain, Italy, France and Germany combined...

Yes, and moving up the cases per capita list. From 10th in late March up to 3rd as of today. May even take the prize.

The USA is in 20th place when you sort by cases per million, 15th in deaths per million and first in total cases.

The number of new cases continues to trend down in the US. With some luck last week really will have been our peak.
The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

Over 25% of the Michigan workforce have applied for unemployment benefits: https://moneymaven.io/mishtalk/economic ... jlV8uQt85w

A quarter of the workforce just wiped out in a month!

Interesting read with ideas on why the number of deaths is so low in Germany (Early detailed contact-tracing won time and so the shutdown happened in a relatively early stage)

Germany's death rate is 21x that of Australia. You only look good because you are surrounded by fuckups in Europe.

Well, in Australia, you are having all those venomous spiders that eat the virus before it can infect people.

Australia's population is not concentrated like Europe. Nobody here has to drive hours to reach a shop or doctor.

Uhm, yes it is. 64% of Australians live in five cities with a population of 1.26 to 4.39 million inhabitants. Most of the rest are crammed into the narrow coastal strip east of the Great Dividing Range.

No worries. We all have our brain fades. At least i know that I do.

I like laughing at your blind spots, lemmy, but this isn't one, really.

This crisis has news, anti-news and dis-news being sprayed like a firehose.

Trying to sort out which data are meaningful is tough as fuck for aspie researchers, nevermind a lay person exposed to a mix of authoritative media lies, and authoritative media facts.

I've noticed though, that when asking about 'how we exercise our civil liberties during this kind of crisis', I invariably get a lot of pushback insisting that lives are precious.

As if civil liberties are not.

Much of the world cannot meet, cannot go talk with strangers. I don't have anything to compare it to, historically, but I do think it is historic.
