That's not completely true. While I agree that it would be better to prevent carbon emissions in the first place, offsetting has benefits, because the money is invested in things that will reduce carbon emissions in the future.

From a quarter to half of Earth’s vegetated lands has shown significant greening over the last 35 years largely due to rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change on April 25.

I like green, so I am pleased with this result of increased carbon. Shame about the scolding little girl with the braids and the opulent, jet-setting lifestyle, but you can't please everyone. Maybe she'll grow to like greenery.
