I'm beginning to think that these petitions are viewed by the Gov. as a toy to let the lower classes 'let off steam'.

The more people that sign, the less comfortable Boris can be about getting away with this cowardly move.

He has no ideas, so he wants to limit the chances for debate that will show just how clueless he is.

Rees-Mogg is on the radio saying that when people voted to Leave they voted to Leave under any circumstances and by any means possible - even though Boris, Gove, Farage, Fox, Redwood et al campaigned for Leave on the basis that a negotiated deal with the EU would be "the easiest thing in human history". When asked if the 5-week prorogation of Parliament was inappropriate, because it not only suspends Parliament but also bans MPs from the the Palace of Westminster (from their offices) and forbids Ministers from signing documents (basically answering questions, making official statemetns, publishing ministerial reports: making decisions etc) Rees-Mogg said "It was only the most constitutionally inappropriate thing that happened yesterday."

We're all suffering with Brexit fatigue, but that's no excuse to let the executive get away away with rampant electioneering while they enjoy the luxury of 5 weeks of direct rule without the inconvenience of Parliamentary scrutiny or getting their arses pwn in committees or a PMQs etc. In the summer many were saying that Brexit was such a big thing that the parties should put their conferences off until November - but I guess they all need the PR and fund raising junket now more than ever.

Who knows? It would mean a few handfuls of Conservatives would have to vote against their own government and against their own political careers in the national interest - so probably not. Of course there's a political dimension here - in an adversarial system the job of the opposition is to make the party in power look bad, but a great many people have some legitimate and serious concerns about the route the Johnson administration seems hell bent on pursuing as well as the means by which he seeks to get there.

The government's suspension of Parliamentary business for 5 weeks is not the inconsequential matter Tories like Rees-Mogg and Duncan Smith say it is - just a matter of organising the parliamentary calendar before the Queen's speech that official starts a new parliamentary session. If that were truly the case then the Rees-Mogss and Duncan Smith's wouldn't be popping up on every news outlet to enthusiastically gaslight the public over what the objections to the suspension of parliamentary business are actually all about. According to these Eton educated multi-millionaires there are no legitimate objections to a no-deal Brexit or the unprecedented suspension of Parliament: objectors are disingenuous mendacious liars with candyfloss concerns that quickly wash away in their crocodile tears and who's primary purpose is to subvert 'the will of the people'.

Interestingly, that so-called 'will of the people' is something usually expressed through Parliament by our elected representatives - or it was until last Wednesday. Side-stepping the protocols and understandings which pass for the UKs constitution the suspension puts the votaries of the Brexitarian faith in the position of having it both ways: "If the prorogation were an attempt to stop Parliament making decisions which could bind the government and/or limit its scope of action then it's only right and proper that normal democratic process should be suspended in order to prevent Parliament from binding or limiting the government - because that's against 'the will of the people'! But really we're just taking 3 weeks longer than anyone else to prepare for the Queens speech. LOL"

As for the Labour party, I don't think their political fortunes lie in thwarting the UKs exit from the EU but in picking up the pieces afterwards - something I think the Tories have finally cottoned on to with their apparently Austerity-busting announcements of more money for schools and hospitals, to be paid for by... erm.... more tax cuts! When people think there's little to chose between the two main parties they usually end chosing the Tories on election day because, well, we don't call them 'our betters' for nothing eh?
