I have an uncle, no longer alive, who was a coal miner and joined the merchant navy during the war, where ironically, he developed severe claustrophobia. When under attack or threat of attack the doors between sections of the ship were sealed to improve the chances of remaking afloat if you were holed. If you happened to be unlucky...
He lived that life for four years and was sunk an rescued in the North Atlantic once.
After the war he took exams and ultimately became the manager of a coal pit. Somehow from the late 40s until her retired he managed never to go underground again.
He drank like a fish too - to ‘medicate’ his anxiety I suspect. A nice guy too.
