well, wait for them to actually trot that one out, and see how full of lead it is once it has been through the European reactions.
It has the virtue of solving the Irish border issue at a stroke. That will please the EU. We shall see

The petition is still climbing. It is now about 5,972,000, but the rate has dropped to about 28 per minute.

It actually might, but it smacks far too much of UK keeping the good sides of Europe and avoiding the responsibilities to be really acceptable.

Not really. The UK would be bound by EU trading regs, would have no seat at the table in planning/making them and would not be able to make trading deals separately. Quite a sacrifice for the hard brexiteers. Some of them are wavering though.

Also looking, ridiculously like we are going to have to hold European elections now.
People other than eurosceptics might actually pay attention to them for a change!

The election is in less than two months. Would the UK laws even allow organizing an election this late? Election laws usually have time limits on preparing an election.

I'm sanguine some preparation has already been done.

My son is a senior civil servant - head of PR for the DVLA no less (vehicles and licensing etc). He tells me that they have done little else but work on contingency plans in almost every government department for the last 18 months. It is driving them nuts.

So, I guess this means the civil servants working at DVLA will be the only ones standing for election in May.

Pro-Brexiters block roads in Westminster chanting 'Bye bye EU'
Thousands of protesters calling for Brexit are rallying outside parliament after MPs inside voted down Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement on the day the UK was supposed to be leaving the EU.

Leave Means Leave supporters lined past parliament as a March To Leave procession that started in Sunderland two weeks ago arrived in Westminster.

Traffic came to a standstill around Parliament Square as Brexit backers blocked the road while chanting “we shall not be moved”, “Brexit now” and “Bye bye EU”.

Some moved on to chants of “Oh, Tommy Robinson”, in support of the English Defence League founder who is now advising Ukip and addressed the crowds on Friday afternoon.

Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was playing his hour-long film attacking the BBC from a large stage on Parliament Street on Friday afternoon as demonstrators gathered outside the Palace of Westminster.

Hundreds of people stood in front of the stage, which is officially organised by Ukip, with many more pouring across as Robinson began speaking. Thousands more sat on the grass of Parliament Square enjoying the sunshine, as Nigel Farage’s March to Leave arrived.

The protestors ranged from far right activists through to Trump-voting Americans and French supporters of a “Frexit”.
Those who voted Leave might not all be swivel-eye, right-wing bigots, but said racists have certainly piggybacked the crusade and now appear to have become it's semi-official spokespiece.

You don't have to be a knuckle-dragging neo-fascist to support BREXIT, but it helps.

knoucle dragging neo fascist... that admirably describes the morons who believe that leaving Europe will lead to Britain recovering the Empire il lost more than half a century ago... of course, you no longer have the army, navy, or population pool to recreate those to even control such an empire, and you can't go back on independence that has been granted without doing some heavy warfare... not wars you can win anymore...
