MPs advised to travel in groups to avoid abuse over Brexit

A deputy speaker of the House of Commons has advised MPs they should take a black cab or travel home together to avoid the risk of intimidation or abuse, as public tensions rise over the Brexit process.

Lindsay Hoyle, a long-serving Labour MP, emailed all colleagues on Thursday afternoon to say the Metropolitan police had been “left in no doubt” it had to ensure that “members of parliament can vote in parliament without fear”.

“Personally, I have never felt this level of tension during my time in the house and I am aware that other colleagues feel the same,” Hoyle wrote. “Many colleagues have already been subject to widely publicised abuse and intimidation.”..

Yeah, the Republicans here are like that about immigration. A lot of lip-service, but no action to secure the border.

US Republicans and UK Brexitarians are ideological bed-fellows. Constantly blowing on the dog whistle and then blaming everyone else when the barking starts.

The Dog Whistle assertions are just a way to accuse someone of something they didn't do.

Politician you don't like: "Our border is porous - we have an inordinate number of foreign persons illegally crossing the border and living here illegally!"

You: "he's racist! Saying we need less illegal immigration is just a dog whistle for being racist against brown people."

Politician you don't like: "That's not true - I'm not racist - I just don't want hundreds of thousands of people crossing without inspection, and bringing drugs and crime with them to this country - we have a nation, and we have, like other nations, the right to control our borders."

You: "that's just a dog whistle! You're saying all immigrants are druggies and criminals!"

Politician you don't like: "But, 1 in 3 women who cross the border are raped by fellow illegal immigrants and/or coyotes along the way - it's a big problem"

You: "ohhh! ohhh! Another whistle! You're saying all immigrants are rapists!"

And, so it goes - around and around and around and around --

Supposed to be for UK citizens here or living abroad. Requires a post code and a tick box, but it is hardly robust in enforcing its rules.

I hope I am not required to present any ID or verification of my right to vote in UK elections when I go there to vote. Surely, that's an "only in America" thing, isn't it? Only evil 'merka would require someone to actually show that they are a citizen....

You can, but it probably won't count. They will prune the figure at some point once they've checked postal codes and IP addresses etc. There's usually around 5% cut to the signature total after a few days particularly with the faster growing, higher-profile petitions. This particular petition has grown at a faster rate than any other before it.

In the run up to the referendum an MP was murdered by someone inspired by the anti-immigrant rhetoric. Last night Theresa May announced to the nation that MPs are the problem stopping Brexit and denying the will of the people. Today an MP was harassed and assaulted in the street by someone echoing May's sentiments.

I hope I am not required to present any ID or verification of my right to vote in UK elections when I go there to vote. Surely, that's an "only in America" thing, isn't it? Only evil 'merka would require someone to actually show that they are a citizen....

Every voter gets a card through the post. You are asked to take it and hand it in at the station but bizarrely it isn’t compulsory. You have to provide your address to the officials. Its shot through with holes really.

Oh - in Northern Ireland you have to provide ID.

MPs in favour of remaining in the EU or a so-called soft-Brexit have been labelled as 'unpatriotic', 'traitors' and 'saboteurs' by the right-leaning press, who also branded the High Court judges who ruled that Brexit was a matter for parliament rather than just the executive as "Enemies Of The People" and 'thieves'. On the whole Brexitarians have made reactionary rhetoric respectable again.

In a speech last night broadcast on TV May, thoughtlessly (or not) laid the blame for the shitfest we are going through on MPs. It was a stupid thing to do and actually not fair. Our adversarial politics makes the sort of consensus we need right now almost impossible to attain.

In any case she could be said to have endangered MPs as a result. Bercow, a bit of a twat in many respects, today praised them, dropped a thinly veiled criticism of May and called for stopping the demonisation of those with different opinions on these matters to oneself.

She has in addition shot herself in the foot in that she’s plans a third go st getting her deal through parliament - next week as I recall. This won’t have helped.
