Returning jihadists.
People may not be familiar with this story, though most ‘western’ countries have similar dilemmas to sort out.
This girl joined Isis at the age of 15, got herself married out in a war zone and lived the Caliphate dream, dropping two kids (both who died) in the process. Recently our government decided to strip her of British nationality when she decided she had had enough and asked nicely if she could come home please. She was moved to a camp following her refusal for re-entry to the UK where it seems a third small child has now died. Our Home Secretary (responsible for domestic security) is getting it in the neck from people making cheap emotional capital out of it all.
The girl was clearly spectacularly misguided but she was only 15 when she was (apparently) recruited. It begs the question as to what’s to be done with such people.

It's a common problem with all belief systems. How do you 'wipe' the mind to start again? Whatever 'conversion' or 'de-conversion' techniques are used, the pathways and connections in the brain thus formed will be permanent. I suppose one may set-up contradictory pathways to counteract the original pathways' intentions, but the 'originals' will still remain.

I dunno. I wouldn't want to be held responsible, as an adult, for the stupid decisions I made when I was 15. But all i did was occasionally sneak out of the house and once stole a bag of oranges, i never joined an international terrorist organization.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Enemy agents usually try to sneak back into a country.
I've only heard public sympathy for females taking this route. I sure hope someone isn't playing on our sympathies...

As ever it is the extreme cases which make the correct action difficult to determine. If this girl was a guy in his mid 20s we would have very little sympathy I expect.
On the other hand these people have joined an organisation, however ramshackle in places, which vows to overthrow our way of life. There’s an illiberal part of me that it tempted to say tough tits - you made a choice and now you’ll have to live with it.

As far as I'm concerned we are at war with these terrorist organizations and people like her have committed high treason. I'd welcome her back to serve a life sentence in a special ward of the prison where she cannot indoctrinate others.
Re: Returning jihadists.
That's what I meant by floating, off-shore prison. It's not as respectful an answer as shooting her, but as I mentioned, I've a weak stomach.

Well, after WWII some really bad nazi war criminals got good jobs instead of a punishment...

Put her on probation and monitor her for a number of years. You may even consider having her participate in any studies you've got going on about the problem of youth joining extremists organizations. That's just an idea.
I have no idea if it's practical or not. She could be dangerous.

I was given a year of free milkshakes once. The year passed and I hadn’t bothered to get even one.
Re: Returning jihadists.
If these Foreign Fighters aren't punished for joining a terrorist organization, doesn't that simply encourage more people to do the same and bolster terrorist recruiting efforts?
"Hey, I left a rich western country to go fight for an Islamic extremist organization in a foreign land, and when I didn't like it anymore I just came home! You can too!"
I don't think simply letting them return is a very wise policy.

What I find interesting is that the Home Secretary is given the power to revoke citizenship at will (in this case I assume under British Nationality Act 1981 Section 40; in the interest of 'conduciveness to the public good') without even the pretense of due process.

Re: Returning jihadists.
Maybe Jason, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that you'll only get x number of people joining regardless of how these cases are handled, all other factors remaining equal. (e.g. public opinion, patriotism, that sort of thing) What's the rush like to join ISIS these days?

Re: Returning jihadists.
I joined a far left party in my early 20s and for a short while sincerely believed that violent revolution and the overthrow of capitalism was the only way forward for the people of the world. I was older than the girl in this story and certainly responsible for my own actions.
Was I a traitor? Maybe. But I didn’t subscribe to those views for long and I got sucked into the system just like everyone else in the end.
