So, let's work to sort their shit out. What's a wall going to do for people with TB, people being trafficked, or gunned down by cartels?

Why do we always have to go with the wrong solution first? You must know a wall isn't going to be what ultimately solves these problems.

The wall would keep them out of the US.

A wall will keep people from being trafficked into the US.

A wall would keep people from being gunned down in the US by the Mexican cartel members.

Any asylum seekers could go to a port of entry and make their claim.

Seems reasonable.

It seems shortsighted.

It's shortsighted because it doesn't address the reasons why people are attempting to cross the border. Take your concern about diseases, how is a wall going to solve the problem? Is it better to cross our fingers and hope that nothing gets through or to spend more to help our neighbors address their poor disease prevention?

Where was the last caravan from and why were they running?


Now, if you want to say that the wall is to address an immediate need while we work with our neighbors to improve their lot, fine. It's a lot harder to argue against that. Most people aren't going to believe you, but at least it shows you're willing to talk about the bigger picture.

Almost all illegal border crossings do, though.

The illegal immigration through "ports of entry" with inspection are not illegal entrances into the US. When you fly into an airport, if you don't have a visa, they put you on a plane back home. If you have a visa, you are a legal entrant (maybe an immigrant, maybe a nonimmigrant, depending on the visa). A visa overstay is not a crime, but that is where most people who are in the country without a proper visa come from - they are visa overstays.

All of the 60,000 in December, for example and all of the 52,000 in November, for another example - they all were illegal entrants, crossing in without inspection.

Addition to the above- a person overstaying a B visa visiting for business or pleasure, for example, is not the same league as a person crossing illegally. Almost all of the illegal visa overstays go home in short order. Most are mistakes, travel snafus where their flights were delayed, family issues where they just stay somewhat longer than allowed, etc. Another big group are people who overstay their current visa because they have some other visa application pending. Or, they fuck up their H1-B or other work visa, and wind up with an expired visa.

The Democrats, of course, want to pretend that properly applying for a visa, flying into the US, presenting papers for inspection, being admitted to the US lawfully, and then overstaying the date on the visa, is exactly the same thing as thousands of people running across the border without inspection.
