President Donald Trump tweeted Saturday evening that he didn't know Brett McGurk, the top US official leading the fight against ISIS.

Trump called McGurk a "grandstander" for resigning over Trump's recent decision to withdraw 2,000 troops from Syria.

McGurk reportedly told his colleagues in an email on Friday that he could not in good conscience carry out Trump's orders to withdraw 2,000 troops.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis also resigned this week, citing differences between his and Trump's views on how to treat US allies and adversaries.

A number of Democrats, led by representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York’s 14th congressional district, are advocating for the creation of a “select committee for a green new deal” that would work to develop a detailed plan to decarbonise the US economy. The goal would be to have a plan of action in place by 2020, which could be quickly implemented – if Democrats take both the Senate and presidency in the 2020 elections.

The proposed goals of the green new deal reflect the vast scale of changes needed in the near future to put the US on a path to help limit global warming to below 1.5C. It is an attempt to move the Democratic platform toward ambitious climate action.

However, it is also facing pushback from more centrist members of the caucus who argue that the goals may be too ambitious and that the focus should be on potential near-term bipartisan solutions.

CNN) — It's easy to understand why President Donald Trump is tweeting so frantically, slapping away at the shadows that encircle him ever more closely. The events of Tuesday alone add even more tension to the President and the country's ongoing drama.
The day started with a flurry of presidential tweets, including one that sounded like a show of support and/or an effort by Trump to influence his disgraced former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was headed to court for what was supposed to be his sentencing after pleading guilty to lying to the FBI. "Good luck today in court," Trump wrote to Flynn, adding, "will be interesting to see what he has to say. ..."
Republicans will have to make a decision soon, because Trump's troubles are becoming heavier by the day. The list of indictments, guilty pleas and investigations seems to keep growing -- and it's not just the Mueller investigation, which Trump so urgently seeks to discredit.
