More wall-wrangling:
While the legislation, which passed the Senate Wednesday, is expected to pass the House before the end of the week, many conservatives are calling on the President to oppose the legislation and Trump is listening. But a House Republican leadership news conference was delayed Thursday morning as lawmakers debated how to proceed, lending even more uncertainty to how the issue would get resolved.

No, they're not slaves. The problem is the wall, not inmate labor, which should be used to benefit the community like the California inmate firefighters.

Yes. They literally are slaves.

They are forced, unpaid labour. Literally slaves.

Absurd. I suppose community service is also a form of slavery, and those who've been given several hundred hours should feel equally aggrieved as actual slaves. It is forced unpaid labor afterall.

People doing community service generally aren't making people money. At least not in this country. But tgat bullshit corporate prison system you have means people make money for nothing off other's backs.

It's modern day slavery

Can you describe the difference between slavery, and non-slavery?

Will minimum-wage earners always be slaves? What about salaried people, who have to work extra hours for the same money?
How about a server who doesn't get a tip?

Slavery is a buzzword. Skip using it and try again to say what you mean.

Inmate labor is no better than slave labor, it's underpaid and seldom voluntary to start with.

Indeed it is, it's judicially mandated slave labour

I don't know the US system, but I understand they sentence people to labour.

In Canada, some similar things happen. Work while incarcerated is very low-paid, and failing to participate means not only the money missed, but the other inmates can be used to bully the unwilling into service by calling them 'lazy'.

What should happen to prisoners is...? Well, I don't know. I would like to think there are terribly unpleasant consequences to ruining people's lives with criminal acts. At the same time, I wouldn't want my prison system treating people terribly.

So what is your take? Lockup with gentle reeducation offered? Brutal labour? Something in between?
