No news on that Jim. If she did she isn’t telling so far.

Re: Hard Brexit or Hard Brexit
It wasn't that far off either. Over a third of her MPs voted for her to go. That's many more than the ERG group has. As I understand it she now can't be challenged for a year, but I wonder if being stuck with her would be enough to make any of those 117 abstain in a parliamentary confidence vote when Labour bring one? They would in effect be resigning the whip and losing the support of their party in the face of any future elections, so it's very unlikely, but despite May's lot trying to spin winning this vote as a success, she's never been weaker in terms of support. But if there's one thing May can do, it's to blindly carry on regardless of the crises and lack of support around her.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Aye. But at least she has the 'confidence' of the party, and perhaps now can push the fundamentalist Brexitarians towards the sidelines.

What is your source for that?

Re: Hard Brexit or Hard Brexit
Considering that the Cons would get less than 40% of the vote if an election were held now, most of these MPs were voting for self-preservation rather than May.

Also nobody wants to be handed the poisoned chalice.

Weird. It seems that she relied on the support of MPs that originally supported "Remain".Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 10:17 pmAye. But at least she has the 'confidence' of the party, and perhaps now can push the fundamentalist Brexitarians towards the sidelines.
You could call this a "cock-up", and not be entirely inaccurate.

Re: Hard Brexit or Hard Brexit
They finally realised the total mess they have created. No one else would not get anything else out of the EU. It is totally arrogant to think otherwise. Most of the EU was happy to see her survive. They know her and the thought of another even more arrogant git coming along and demanding this and that was not an enthralling possibility.rainbow wrote: ↑Thu Dec 13, 2018 6:12 amWeird. While this will shut up the ERG for a while it does not clarify the status of her bill. What it will do is focus minds and bring feet back onto terra firma.
May is now damaged goods. Dont think the EU leaders will forget that.

Re: Hard Brexit or Hard Brexit
Thanks. Maybe you should have mentioned that in your previous post. Something like "An old, strongly right leaning Greek teacher I had said: ""demos" is an old Greek word that means 'stupid'".

The Oxford Dictionary defines 'demos' as 1. The common people of an ancient Greek state. and 1.1 The populace of a democracy as a political unit. Delving into actual ancient Greek usage in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, C.W. Blackwell came up with 1. village, 2. people and 3. assembly.

I thought it just meant "population" or something with a very similar import...

Re: Hard Brexit or Hard Brexit
It was a bit more specific than that. The "population" consisted of males only, 18 years old or more, and not slaves. Only they were officially listed by name as members of the demos.

Plato didn't like 'em anyway.
Mogsy, BoJo and Fox: sounds like a kids animated TV show, or a particular crap firm of accountants.
Mrs May got more affirmative confidence votes than she got when she was elevated to leader. The whole thing was a colossal waste of time, an irrelevant distraction, and a typically cynical move by Mogsy, BoJo and Fox and the members of the ERG - who are of course cynics in both the contemporary and classical sense.rainbow wrote: ↑Thu Dec 13, 2018 6:12 amWeird. Re: Hard Brexit or Hard Brexit
given that written communication was the exclusive province of aristocratic classes to whom most of the political body still felt like the 'great unwashed'... yeah, I still understand why my old prof would have translated "demos" as 'idiot'... After all, according to plato, Socrates passed his time demonstrating how his fellow politically enfranchised people were utter numbnuts... pushed it too far and it got him a drink of hemlock, but still not wrong.

Re: Hard Brexit or Hard Brexit
Moggsy is still saying she can choose to resign showing once again the typical Brexiteer mentality of ignoring everything and pushing there own policy. He even compared her to Thatcher in resigning who he says was still much stronger but knew when to go. This is the arrogant mentality that really gets up the noses of other European leaders.
