They are here too, but in theory they in turn are controlled by the local politicians, which here are generally divided down party lines.

In my last job before I retired I had the dubious honour of presenting a couple of reports about projects I managed to the ‘council’. I was pretty nervous on both occasions but I need not have been. They asked really dumb questions and they were out to score really dumb party political points on members of the opposing party. All a bit pointless in terms of the outcome and it made no difference in the end. I was one of the civil servants doing the business and they were not terribly interested.

and yeah, I stayed home last saturday because a) I did not want to get caught in the protest that was bound to pass in front of my home and b) said protest cause the metro to be closed, so I could not access the place where I really wanted to be.

He lost them the moment he started coing his wealth favorable policies and forgetting that most of his voters in the second round were not even faithful walkers but people who had voted for him out of disgust for the Le Pen lady. That sounds like a society which "the rest of the world" should emulate, eh? Where "the people have had enough" and it's "difficult to reach the end of the month" the people are "fed up." They're so fed up, that "the people" are willing to riot and destroy private businesses, torch cars by the hundreds, damage national monuments, assault police officers and riot -- over a gas tax.

And, Macron took to the podium to beg for forgiveness and offer shiny baubles to get the mob to go home, and they told him to fuck off. As noted in Salon, France charges like $200 tuition for college. But, alas - when you're government funding college, you have to limit the number of spaces available, because the government only allocates a certain number of college entrance spots for people that "qualify." In the US, there is a college for anyone that wants to go - if you want a college degree, there is a college that will take you. Apparently, in France that isn't the case since the students have taken to the streets to protest a "lack of college enrolment places available to [high school] graduates." They should be happy though, because the college enrolment places which they don't qualify for are paid for out of their tax money! (I just can't imagine why people wouldn't like that....)
