The Pittsburgh synagogue shooting has put new pressure on Gab, the niche social network where alleged shooter Robert Bowers and countless other white supremacists have been able to network and post their hate-filled messages.

Bowers was an active Gab user, even posting what appeared to be an announcement of the attack shortly before he allegedly shot and killed 11 people, and wounded at least six others, at the Tree of Life Synagogue.

Gab celebrated the attention it received after Bowers’ posts were found, claiming it was receiving a million hits per hour following the shooting.

The site even has a frog logo that echoes the alt-right favorite “Pepe the Frog,” and new users start with a profile picture cribbed from the “NPC meme” popular on far-right sites like 4Chan. In a March SEC filing, the company claimed to be positioning itself as a home for “conservative, libertarian, nationalist, and populist internet users.”

Not that it matters, but you can't pin this one on Trump. In the past the shooter did emphasise via social media that he is not a Trump supporter, never as much touched a MAGA cap and regards the President as a globalist, i.e. part of the "Jewish problem" Apparently he also has a valid and current gun license and no criminal record. All his guns were legally bought.

And yet the gun nuts keep insisting that the solution for the gun problem is more guns. Just imagine Trump's proposed official armed guard going nuts. "Yeah, we vetted him. He had no criminal record. He had a wife and three kids. Was popular at work and his golf club. Nobody expected why he went postal. We can't explain it."

UK towns ‘polarised’ by rise of far right

Communities across the UK have told Britain’s first counter-extremism commissioner that they are increasingly facing “a climate of intolerance and polarisation”.

Speaking several months into a nationwide investigation to quantify the scale and reach of extremism, Sara Khan said she had been shocked by the depth of disquiet expressed to her by the residents of the 13 towns and cities she has so far visited.

Khan, appointed by Theresa May in the wake of the Manchester Arena attack, told the Observer: “I was really shocked that in every place I visited I heard deep concerns about the activity and impact of the far right.

“Councils across the country raised the impact the far-right demonstrations have on whole towns, exploiting tensions and stoking division. I repeatedly heard about a climate of intolerance and polarisation.”

One youth worker from the south of England told Khan of his fears that a “whole generation of vulnerable children” could be lost to the far right. Elsewhere, a local education group said it had seen increasing numbers of children making racist and extremist statements in schools.

Khan said her investigations had detected a sense Britain was on the cusp of a fresh wave of rightwing extremism: “This backs up what experts have been telling me – that we are seeing a new wave of the far right: modernised, professionalised and growing; supported by a frightening amount of legal online extremist material.”

Matthew Feldman, director of the centre for fascist, anti-fascist and post-fascist studies at Teesside University, said he was not surprised by Khan’s initial findings: “I think this is the most propitious time for the radical right since the end of the second world war, that hasn’t yet translated into activists, members or a party that might be able to overcome the first-past-the-post system.”

Khan’s comments come days after the country’s most senior counter-terrorism officer, the Metropolitan police’s Neil Basu, told the home affairs select committee that far-right extremists and Islamists were “feeding each other” and that police were currently presiding over 700 live terrorism investigations. Basu’s predecesscor, Mark Rowley, said in August that the UK had not “woken up” to the threat posed by the far right....

Indeed, Trump wasn't anti-Jew enough for him. On the other hand, Trump's election has encouraged those who hold toxic right-wing ideologies including plenty of groups and individuals who are Trump supporters as well as being openly anti-Jew. It's important to remain rational and take a balanced viewpoint if we're truly intent on understanding the concerns and motivation of filthy pieces of fucking shit like this.

Filthy pieces of drek like that shooter are ill in their heads, no rational thought process can help understanding them, they fixate morbidly on a given thing, true or false, that they obsess about until they take action about it, in an irrational way and to unreasonable extent that turns them from "normal" members of society, albeit weird ones, into actual demented criminals, that will nonetheless be judged as sane because the network of asylums has been gutted and they can't be institutionalized and possibly studied and taken care of by experts who might, in time, cure them.

I helped an organization for awhile, whose primary goal is shutting down institutions such as you describe.

It is probably a bit of pipe-dreaming, but worth it.

We do need asylums (or SOMEthing). I think it is the community involvement/family checkups which lead to the worst of the abuses. How then, do we get communities more involved in assuring the good treatment of horrible, weird and anti-social people?
