I don't experience that shit and I don't think you do either. I'm going to repeat that: I don't think you experience these problems.

I would place this entire bit of thinking into the same category as your other exaggerated problems, maybe 1a.) Exaggerated Threats

I've never met someone in favor of child marriage, liberal or conservative --duh. If there is a problem like the one you describe then perhaps it is a problem of pushing fences too far. We put up fences around sacred ideals and principles to protect ourselves against violating them. Sometimes we push that fence out too far e.g. don't look lest you touch.

In this case --assuming your problem is worth talking about-- the fence could have been pushed too far in the hopes of avoiding further conflict with the mostly Muslim world. People have become noticeably more concerned about the threats Muslims face since the US entered Afghanistan. The FBI shows that here at home Muslims faced more threats from 9/11 up to just a few years ago.

People have probably pushed fences intended to protect equality out further in the hopes of reigning that threat in.

What are you doing about it? You're pretending the left has lost its mind and gone gaga for horrible religious practices. You're acting like you're scared to be yourself around Muslims. You're aligning yourself with Christians because hey, they aren't Muslims.

There is also the fact that for Merkin atheists, Christians are a much bigger problem than Muslims. Over here, it's the Christians that want to ban abortion, teach creationism in schools, control government via the GOP, etc. There simply aren't enough Muslims here to be a serious problem. So naturally, secular Merkins will tend to bitch about Christianity more than Islam. It's like if your garden has a gopher problem but not a snake problem, you will likely complain more about gophers than snakes.
