Running through a leak

There is a leak in town. At least I think so.

What I know is that heavy equipment is often brought in, mid-winter, to break up ice and allow water to flow.

The rumors, chats and assumptions follow...

One of the stronger ones is that the City doesn't know where the water is coming from. They can 'tag' their water, to identify if it is a City leak (as opposed to a natural source/creek) but if there is a small leak, and big creek, how would you know?

Another is that the City approved a building where they shouldn't. The main is leaking beneath that building now, and the City is loathe to tear down that building (which would be the only way to repair it)

I run by that location a lot, and recently brought along a geologist. She has been working in the field for years, and while we chatted a bit about it, she wasn't interested a whole lot.

So I have another geologist (hydro-geologist? Geo-hydrologist?) coming today. This one is newer (he doesn't even have his phd yet) but has more interest in this kind of problem. His research subject has to do with how small creeks behave under the ice.

I have asked my pal at the City, he may be able to share some information. My guess is that they have had engineers, planners and councilors review the problem, but none of them are dedicated to sniffing out flowing water under sub-arctic winter ice, so I hope todays run brings some interesting perspective to bear on the problem.

Any runners, hydrogeologists, geohydrologists or civil engineers here?

I'm obsessed - fanatical about running. I get that way about some stuff. With running, I thought it was worth leaning into it lol

I haven't done a 50k yet. In fact, my longest distance ever was a bit over 30. Recently, I did a Yukon road relay and did 25 and a bit.

I love running, and think you should do it. Everybody. There is something primal and satisfying, especially about running with others. There is good reason difficult negotiations often include a walk.

Anyway, if 'back into some sort of physical shape' means you fell out of it a bit, let me blather on pretentiously a bit

What you need to know you will learn easily, for the most part. One thing you might not learn in time is that you are more vulnerable to injury.

Plan what you will do (or follow a proven learn to run plan like this) and STOP.

See, overdoing it is the most common mistake. Believe it - you work hard enough to get any goal. You will overdo it if it feels good.
