Isn't the problem that this thing is predicted to just sit on the coast and dump huge amounts of rain? It's also predicted as a Cat 4 system isn't it, which is very dangerous on its own. Some evacuations are almost certainly necessary.

Yeah the rainfall is gonna be bad if it sits there for a couple of days, I'd be worried about that and of course the storm surge. But it's the rain that gets you on the barrier islands. When we first moved to Daytona, Old Man Stepp (my dad's partner) said don't worry about the ocean, it's the river that gets you. Turned out to be true, my parent's old house was on the river, and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 flooded it. The ocean never over-topped the dunes, but the river rose like a bitch.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Being prepared to GTFO is different than the absurd dire forewarnings. Ill omens and portents of doom have been seen. Fiery dragons have crossed the sky. Never before has such an inroad from the sea been thought possible! From the Fury of the Hurricanes, O Lord, Deliver Us!

People need to use their heads, and be armed with useful info. If the authorities are saying "you must leave" then fine, say that, but they aren't saying that. What they're doing is covering their candy asses, because they don't want anyone to be able to accuse them of not having made serious-enough statements. They want to be able to say "see! we told you to get out!" - so every fucking storm is a "state of emergency" now.

Seems to me the media are hyping the DRAMA, which might add to the sense that this is s storm in a teacup.

Just read that North Carolina passed a law in 2012 making public policy based on scientific predictions of sea level rises illegal. Instead only the last 30 years of historical data can be used. I guess if you don't like what scientists have to say you can just outlaw it.

Who needs science when you can pray the hurricane away? It works with gayness and mass shootings...

No such thing as trump derangement syndrome. Nope. Not at all.

He should have responded better to the hurricane that hasn’t made landfall yet. If a single boat gets damaged by Florence, it’s on Trump.

It's almost a function now of having too much available information too soon. Every storm in the Atlantic now seems like the storm of the century, because of the clarity of imagery and the minute by minute updates, as well as the greater presence of wind speed data.

It's great for the hotel, fast food and filling station/oil/fuel industries, but it's not really reasonable to have a practice where every time the cone of a hurricane is predicted to hit the US a 4-7 days from now that that the local and state officials start dire warnings to evacuate 3 to 5 million people. Something has to give. They're panicking people unnecessarily.

"Can", yes, but the likelihood is quite small. The land breaks up the storms. So, the 110 mph winds (at the eye) are high (inside the eye winds are generally calm), and then the wind speed drops precipitously outside of the eye wall. So, the winds in most of the scary looking rain bands are not that big of a deal. The worst tends to be the northeast quadrant (if you imagine the hurricane cut into four equal pieces).

The real bad issue with a hurricane is storm surge, particularly if there is a river involved (Charleston has such a river - I love Charleston by the way -- its French quarter - Rainbow Row - I recommend visiting if you get the chance). Anyway, the flooding in the low lying areas with storm surge and river flooding can be really bad, but that's in a very defined area - people know they're in that area. Those people should, indeed, be very focused on whether they should GTFO.

However, take the example of last year's storm of the century that made landfall in like Islamorada or whatever Key down in Miami. Tons of people stayed around in Key West, and the other Keys - preferring to "ride it out" so they can protect their property and start doing clean up and repairs when it's over. Were bodies washing up on the shore? No. The thing hit a few miles from Key West, and the bars and restaurants were open almost as soon as it had passed.

The No Name Sports Bar stayed open DURING hurricane Irma, closed at 7pm the day it came through, and reopened 7am on Monday. Sloppy Joe's was undamaged (a little water damage, but it didn't slow them down) (they're in a building that's like 80+ years old). The Hog's Breath Saloon was undamaged. Green Parrot (another Hemingway favorite from back in the 1930s) was perfectly fine.

My favorite pub in all the world - Captain Tony's Saloon - had to clean up a bit, and was open again a few days after Irma.

That's not to say there wasn't any damage at all. There was some flooding. And, some buildings were damaged. But, the point is, the panic with respect to Irma was overblown considerably. Even where it directly hit, it didn't do anything remotely close to the damage that the news reporter scaremongering "predicted."

Once the land gets ahold of it, it's going to break up. The topography/elevation on the east coast is different than down around Houston, too. Sure, they'll get rain, but mostly it's going to disappoint the panic-mongers.

https://www.roanoke.com/weather/florenc ... 13f6d.html This article is the kind of article people should read and understand, if they don't already know the drill. The key is preparation, not panic.
