You're right though that there are other problems which need to be addressed. Poverty, education, and healthcare being three big ones that may impact gun violence.

That's why I said it's possible that our behavior will eventually be such that the number of guns isn't a problem. But I doubt it.

It sounds like mental health and well-being in the general population is the probable cause here, not the firearms. Unless you wish to present some study which links possession of a firearm to increased aggression and likelihood of acting on that aggression?

There is no doubt that the reasons for variations in murder rates are many. Availability of firearms is just on of many factors involved. Nevertheless a statistical trend exists. A few months ago I found a correlation between gun ownership and homicide rates in the USA by pasting gun ownership rates by USA states and homicide rates by USA states into Libre Office Calc and letting its regression algorithm work out a trend line. The correlation of more guns, more homicide is undeniable.



I should mention that I don't think possession of a firearm leads to increased aggression. More likely, the same aggression that might lead to a broken jaw in the absence of a firearm might just lead to a fatality in its presence.

Every year 8-900 people are killed in the USA by police, many because they are armed with a firearm, too many because they just might.

Do you have access to a study on American police ROEs? I'm very interested in knowing how you know what you claim to know here.

What is a ROE? Probably not "Rosemary Oleoresin Extract", but among the several dozen meanings for that acronym I have not found one I am confident of being the one you meant. Meanwhile, here are the numbers of annual fatal police shootings in the USA for the years 2015 to 2017.

I'm not prepared to concede the point you're implicitly contending here, that being reduction in CCW is concordant with a reduction in firearms related deaths.

Also, have a look at what happened as a result of the 1996 gun buyback scheme in Australia. There are a couple of flies in that ointment, but we can look into that later, if you like.

The R squared value is very, very low. It would be difficult to say that the upward trend is statistically significant. I suspect that there is a real, if small effect, but it is nothing like a strong proof...
