I'm sure we all knew this was coming... well now it's here.False memories fester when they make sense to our political worldview, when it’s familiar and repeated ad nauseam, when we trust the source of the information, and when this information is corroborated, shared, and discussed by like-minded people.
Where else do all these things happen? Social media. Fake stories tend to move more quickly to people on these platforms than the truth, fueled by surprise and bias.
And so what happens when doctored audio and video get added to the mix?

Yeah. The internet is both a blessing and curse.

Deep-fakes would only fool the easily fooled. Most people will question anything that causes cognitive dissonance. This is the new question. Like Photoshop it will only fool the wanna believers or to too dumb to know the difference types. If it happened without being known about there is something to worry about. But this technology is improving at the same speed of awareness and so no change. The savvy will be more critical and there it will end...

It would fool republicans no problem. You are asking for an open inquisitive mind. There are not that many around thanks mainly to social media. A vast section of society in certain countries acquire their news from FB. "If its in FB it is the truth?".
Memory is easily fooled which is exactly what Trump does. Heard his latest description of himself? "The most favourite president ever". That has been dropped into his tweets as a subliminal message. It will stick with his supporters. Of course it is completely fake supported by fake polls but this the problem.
