He wants to get even, and hint at innocence without the need to go through a investigative trial that might uncover the truth. (whatever that might be). It's well known in the science literature that underage sex is a marker for suicidal behaviour in youth. This being multiplied if there are same sex relationships(see proper science article underneath). So the truth of the matter is important outside of press enquiries, and within press enquiries...that are likely to be more tenacious in their investigations and amplify the chances of a conviction. Not blinker a police investigation, often work in parallel with one.

Cliff was the rock n roll star your mum would like. Hugely successful over here and a born again xian to boot from some time in the early 70s. Closet gay too most people think which doesn’t seem remotely necessary these days.

The UK equivalent of Pat Boone. Those 50s mommies loved him, he was so clean cut and Christian and utterly fucking boring. Little Richard, Elvis, and Jerry Lee Lewis blew their suburban minds, it was immoral and dangerous, all that leaping about and shouting, and Little Richard wore <GASP> makeup. He was about as out gay as you could be back then without getting lynched. The Ed Sullivan Show (the most popular variety show) had Elvis on but only shot him from the waist up, so young women wouldn't be polluted by his gyrating hips and quit school, get addicted to marijuana and get pregnant by juvenile delinquents.
