Well it seems that Corporate America has got its hands well and truly around the throat of the internet - and they are chuckling all the way to the bank. As of today net neutrality is no longer guaranteed. For those who don't know what it means, the current regulations mean that all data is treated equally. The change in the regulations means that ISPs can charge for 'quality' - i.e. throttle speed, offer super fast speed, give preference to some web content and not others. Supporters say it will increase 'competitiveness' in America for online stuff. Opponents that it will mean most people will get a second class service.

Individuals in the country that values liberty to much, once again at the mercy of powerful corporations? Quite possibly.

Europe currently has its own strong net neutrality regulations, so we appear to be OK for now.

It was just lip service anyway. I've called our provider at least 10 or 15 times bitching about our speed, we've got a 75M line but towards the end of the month we're getting around 12M. I call and they give me some bullshit excuse or another and then BINGO it's fixed and we're back up around 55-60. It's just a way to scrounge more money out of us, the cost of connectivity has dropped drastically in the last couple of years and their profit margins are shrinking. Wait till 5G hits, it's the fucking death knell for cable companies. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people.

Net neutrality isn't about individual consumers speeds. It's about big content providers paying for priority over the little guy.

It's really interesting hearing people and media out of the US, like 42. The narrative is totally concocted and isn't at all reflected in reality. That narrative is a ridiculously (corporate) capitalist skewed one that isn't at all what net neutrality is about. The abolition of net neutrality is solely about allowing giant corporations to pay the bigger bucks to squash smaller content providers. It's a very bad thing for diversity, and unless you are a giant corporation, or a sycophant of one, it's bad for you too.

Nobody gives a shit about the little guy, any more then they give a shit about the local burger joint if there's a McDonalds down the street, The vast lumpen landscape streams TV, Tweets, Facebooks, and watches a bit of porn. Netfilix currently constitutes almost 37% of internet traffic in North America. That's one streaming outlet, the largest, but only one in a vast landscape. This is seriously cutting into Frontier, Verizon, Direct TV, Comcast and all the other pay per view and cable providers - cable companies, satellite providers, etc. They all used to make a LOT of money renting us movies and upcharging us for HBO and Showtime and all the rest. FIOS, Comcast, Direct, and a few others are also THE major internet providers, like damn near 100%. Now everyone is "cutting the cord", dropping their enormously profitable cable TV and going to straight internet streaming. The loss of income to them is staggering. But they cannot compete in terms of content with Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu, they have a fucking massive investment in physical plant that those content providers don't have to deal with. They can't afford to spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year on Game of Thrones level productions, which is what people want and will pay a premium for. Those companies have to make their money somewhere, so they'll slow down customer speeds on those services and then offer an "unlimited, unthrottled" service at a premium price. It's just economics, and in the end it is about consumer internet speeds and just how much they're willing to pay for them. It's all about the money, honey, just like it's always been. You wanna play, you gotta pay. Y'all expected something different, maybe?

Or they'll charge Netflix to give them priority, and Netflix will raise their rates, and people will pay. No matter how you slice and dice it, it's about separating a bit more cash from the punters.

Did you not read what I just wrote above this? You've just presented the false narrative. This has nothing to do with consumer speeds. They can be throttled now. This is solely about big companies being able to squeeze out the smaller content producers.

The paradox of the American economic system. Free enterprise, open competition and all that goes with it does not seem to have applied for a good long while now. Instead you have monopoly economics, with the person who grabs the biggest chunk of a market throttling the rest and then exploiting their position.
