Nobel material on photosynthesis

Post by Tero » Thu Jun 07, 2018 4:20 pm

The guy does not even have a Wikipedia page. His work has been abstracted into popular books, two of them are on oxygen.

from his list of publications there you can follow the evolution of modern photosynthesis. It first appeared in cyanobacteria prior to the cambrian. photosystems I and II were derived from different bacterial origin.

Prior to that, no bacteria had two separate photosystems. Only when you have both can you break the H-O-H bonds that leads to spitting out molecular O2 as a waste product. Prior to this process becoming the major route our planet had no oxygen in the atmosphere.

he has Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science
key paper to get a view of the studies is
Blankenship RE (2017) How cyanobacteria went green. Science 355: 1372-1373.

There seems to be another academic, Soo, involved.
