Visa System crashed in UK and Europe

Post by Alan B » Fri Jun 01, 2018 6:58 pm

BBC
Visa payment disruption hits Europe
Customers across the UK and Europe have been unable to pay for their purchases with Visa cards because of a network failure.
Some shoppers reported they were stuck in queues in supermarkets and petrol stations as Visa transactions could not be processed.
Banks have advised customers that they can still withdraw cash from ATMs.
Visa says it is working to resolve the issue. Mastercard and American Express said they were not affected.
Payment processing through Visa's systems accounts for £1 in £3 of all UK spending, the company said.
Paymentsense, which runs card services for small businesses, said some transactions were now starting to go through but there was a backlog.
Responding to complaints on social media, HSBC said there were issues with processing Visa payments, which were intermittent, but were "slowly recovering".

This is it, the beginning of the end. Or the end of the beginning. Or the middle of the middle. We're doomed, I tell ya, DOOMED.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

My Visa card is my debit card. It was my credit card for as long as having a credit card was advantageous to me. Once my mortgage was paid off it became a financial drain, especially as the banks also introduced annual account fees around then.

It is like an echo chamber Alan.

We only can get debit and credit cards from our bank here. No private companies. How does Visa earn money? We dont pay our banks anything for the service. We dont have bank charges.

Are your banks private? If so, then they are no different to visa/mastercard/etc. And either way, banks have to fund this stuff. So you will be paying for it via interest rates.

They are not all private. We dont pay bank charges. We pay interest if you have credit but no transactional payments. No charges for using your debit card for any amount. I paid 5cents for a bag once by debit card as I dont carry cash. Visa is not popular.
