The trade war started at midnight last night, according to the news. US tariffs commenced then, but the world has yet to respond.

Everyone loses in a trade war. It's true that the US would lose marginally less than others, but it would never get back the losses.
As the instigator of a trade war, the US could become quite isolated.

I seem to remember the US moaning a year or two ago, about China having a virtual monopoly of rare earths. I wonder if they will choose to restrict the supply to the US in retaliation? That would really hurt.
