And you are of course right Scott. I will be extinguished and extinct myself shortly as these things are measured, so it shouldn't mater to me personally what happens afterwards as I won't know. However I find myself still oddly attached to the notion that there are still better things ahead for humanity after my short spell on the planet. It may be romantic dream but it is one I cling to in my small way.

Sums up the mistake of the 60s/70s generation who so thoughtfully threw a Brexit into the futures of the young. Romantically attatched, to the future rather than critically and not giving a damn about what happens after your dead. This 'die in debt and get even' attitude is irresponsible, and shows a disdain for fellow human beings in the future. (if there is one) and compensated with a dream of flying cars everywhere? hardly a compensation at all since they already exist.

It is an illusion foisted upon us in our lives. What right do we have to be here? One of our ancestors decided to take a left turn instead of a right one? Big deal. I never have worried about the future. I have no real desire to live until I am 150. If I do well I have. My stroke last week put everything back into sharp perspective. It matters fuck all.

Really Crumps? Still trotting out the false dichotomies of yore. One doesn't need a mythical magic sky daddy, ported in from an ancient tribe of goat botherers, to find meaning in, well, anything. You nihilists are always looking for excuses for your "inner Meh"...

The 'scale of things' is often invoked to squash our vanity and hubris and the size, complexity and mysteries of the universe do of course teach us than we are less than a gnat's whisker in comparison - certainly in scale.

However, to mix our metaphors a little, everything is 'relative' and the human scale and what concerns us is that which we choose it to be - partly of course built around our own physical and temporal scales. Thus it is that I care for my daughter, family, town, country and planet - with increasingly less intensity as one moves away from the personal scale. And thus it is that I for one do actually care what happens after my day (going back to my earlier point).

During the endless billions of years in the cold heat death eons of the universe nobody and nothing will be around to remember or care, but we have to for ourselves and for the little we have control over in my view. 'Nothing matters in the end' is lazy and self indulgent to my way of thinking.
