That is exactly what I have been saying. My understanding is it is all about links and locating your phone. You have to turn off location along with blue tooth and wifi.Svartalf wrote:That's a step, but it may not be sufficient... they gather data on you from your friends, they can locate you, trace your movements, see what kind of events you are associated with... they are the father of Skynet and Big Brother.pErvinalia wrote:You just need to anonymise yourself. They can locate me as much as they want (not that they could do that further than north coast of NSW). I use a false name. It's useless locating me.Svartalf wrote:That's a step, but it may not be sufficient... they gather data on you from your friends, they can locate you, trace your movements, see what kind of events you are associated with... they are the father of Skynet and Big Brother.pErvinalia wrote:You just need to anonymise yourself. With location turned off (which it is permanently on my phone) apps can't use wifi to locate you. And with location turned on, they can only do it with express permission. And on desktop, there is no way to locate you. You two don't actually have much of an idea of the things you are discussing.Scot Dutchy wrote:That is exactly what I have been saying. I know exactly what I am discussing. You are the one who thinks he so clever he can beat the FB programmers. They dont ask any permission from anyone. Do you think your secret service does? Apps use location without your knowledge or are you so naive. That is the intrinsic problem with phones. They dont need your permission. You make think they do but they dont. If you give it or not does not matter. I am really surprised at you pErv. I was a programmer for 25 years so dont tell me how to suck eggs. You are either totally naive or frightened of the truth.pErvinalia wrote:

So you think the Internet doesn't know you look at boobs or asses and have liberal views? Soon the teens have no options. They can no longer buy the magazines in 5-10 years and make the pages stick together.

When did anonymity become so important anyway? We were never anonymous before the Internet. We may have been isolated, less exposed to risk I guess. But what exactly are the risks? I really don't like the anonymity of the Internet.

a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

Seems only politicians are making a thing out of this. Your guess is as good as mine why that might be?Sean Hayden wrote:When did anonymity become so important anyway? I agree. It doesn't bother me that if someone was inclined to they could dig out information about me - within the limits I set anyway. It is the total anonymity available on the dark web that is a bit alarming frankly (I've visited a few times and it is very nasty indeed in places).Sean Hayden wrote:When did anonymity become so important anyway? Re: Is Facebook killing freedom and liberty?
Well, the UDHR does ensure a right to privacy. I'm OK with most of what the internet knows about me, but you can't put your privacy back in the bottle once you've given it away. Even if I start being private tomorrow all that other stuff is still out there in public. Cambridge Analytica and Facebook might be denying having done anything illegal, which is hardly an indication of whether it's right or not, but every FB user who gave away their privacy without reading the T&Cs shares some of the blame for what they've been up to. If you can't be bothered to read the T&Cs then don't click 'Accept' - that we mainly do click 'Accept' without reading them suggests to me that our privacy isn't a major concern for most people most of the time.

Re: Is Facebook killing freedom and liberty?
But what are people sharing on Facebook that they shouldn't? As much as I dislike the Internet's anonymity, I really dislike watchdogs of the Internet warning people about what not to post and say. I left Facebook because it made me unhappy. I'm one of those people that just feel bad on Facebook.
As for what people share on there, it's what they would share with friends.

If they want a dick pic all they have to do is ask. I'm not precious about it. Or embarrassed.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
