Marcuse was famously a Marxist thinker who tended to rely on Freud for his analysis rather than Marx. He was a reductionist in my view and his analysis of people in the helpless grip of consumerism is simplistic from the perspective of late stage capitalism in my view. And no her wasn't religious - or if he was he kept it private and it wasn't part of his political thinking.

I knew this stuff would come in handy one day.

In the yt interview he talks about about the possibility of a "force" that could effectively oppose capitalism. What could that be?

R. N. Berki wrote in 1972:
Marcuse sharply distinguishes between Freudian psychoanalytic science and Freudian “metapsychology,” criticizing Freud’s own secularist beliefs about the truth of science and religion, and asserting that today “the function of science and of religion has changed” and “where religion still preserves the uncompromised aspirations for peace and happiness, its illusions still have a higher truth value than science which works for their elimination.” (74)

Listen he was an immigrant and knew the Merican's were crazy in love with Freud. As it happens Freud's work was more or less 100% speculation and not remotely scientific. The same with Marcuse who simply did a mashup of Marx and the lovely doctor. Perhaps not 'simply', but her knew his audience and the times he lived in.

And if you think the 'force' he was referring to was remotely religious - well it wasn't. Here he is in 1967.

His view was that Capitalism was too powerful and established to be overthrown by the 'lumpen proletariat', which was Marx's take on what would happen. Marcuse said that the obstacles to a mass revolution happening were huge now (back in the 60s) and that it would take the combined efforts of the educated intelligentsia of the developed world and the mass of discontented workers and unemployed on an international scale for any sort of revolution to happen - the 'force' you are trying to identify..

He was just a guy taking a guess using Marx and Freud as his benchmarks. Freud it turns out was wrong about almost everything. Marx was right about the problem, but sadly not the solution.

There is no magic that can fix the mess I'm afraid. We'll muddle through and with luck make it..quite a lot of luck it will need too.
