Big deal - China is not afraid of enacting protectionist measures. They have tons of 'em. That's the point Trump made during the election. The trade situation is not fair because US goods are subjected to more onerous protectionist measures than goods coming into the US.

That says nothing about your opinion on the steel and aluminium tariffs, and the possible consequences, good or bad...

Huh? The 25% and 2.5% are not there due to free trade. They are due to the lack of a trade deal!

Still messing with Canada and Mexico:
But legal experts say Trump and his advisers have undermined their own national security case by tying restrictions on Canada and Mexico to their cooperation in NAFTA talks. Those two countries were officially exempted from the tariffs for national security reasons, but Trump continued to tie their exclusion to the outcome of NAFTA negotiations in his remarks before signing the tariff orders.

What was the Dems actual position? I would have thought most them would have supported NAFTA given they are neoliberals. Perhaps their opposition was for political gain. :dunno: In any case, a lot on the left support the notion of fair trade, which is still free trade just without the extra financial strictures and general exploitation.

Then sign the damn trade deals! Lack of deals makes tariffs. Also with no deal, patents can’t be enforced.

THe Dems don't have any actual positions. They're like the ass end of a weather vane, whatever way the GOP points they point in the opposite direction.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Forty Two's namesake signed the Act, and here's what Wikipedia says about the vote:
After much consideration and emotional discussion, the US House of Representatives passed the North American Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act on November 17, 1993, 234–200. The agreement's supporters included 132 Republicans and 102 Democrats. The bill passed the Senate on November 20, 1993, 61–38.[21] Senate supporters were 34 Republicans and 27 Democrats. Clinton signed it into law on December 8, 1993; the agreement went into effect on January 1, 1994.[22][23] Clinton, while signing the NAFTA bill, stated that "NAFTA means jobs. American jobs, and good-paying American jobs. If I didn't believe that, I wouldn't support this agreement."[24] NAFTA then replaced the previous Canada-US FTA.
I remember the slogan was, "NAFTA, cause we hafta."

Trade deficit explained. Two factories make 1000 cars in a month. In Mexico they make 1000 red Malibus. In Alabama they make 1000 blue Malibus. No red Malibus are made in USA. US buyers want some red Malibus. With cheaper labor, 150 red Malibus are sent to US at Mexican bulk price. Mexicans want some blue Malibus. In exchange for the same money, 100 American blue Malibus are sent over.
Mexicans end up 50 Malibus less.

They sell all the 850 remaining Malibus to Brazil, who were willing to pay more than Americans.
