School "dinner ladies are not bin men". Of course. One lot is just women doing women's work, and the others are men doing a man's work - and women's work is just less important and less arduous, less challenging, less skilled, and less responsible than men's, eh?

The pay has nothing to do with the sex of the workers. It's the value of the work to the employer, and supply and demand of workers. I'd suggest that there is a smaller pool of willing bin men than dinner ladies, because it's much dirtier and labor intensive work. If an employer can get a cheaper worker, it will.

OK. So I guess employers just don't value women's work as highly as man's work.

If most the lawyers are men, and most of the secretaries women, and secretaries are paid less than lawyers, generally speaking, is that because employers don't value "women's work" as much as men's work?

I know that a government administrator would choose fairly, but most bush operators are in a more, shall we say, competitive market.

It's not immigrants who have brought about systematic wage deflation (with wage growth at it's lowest rate since the Napoleonic wars) or the current housing crisis (with UK home ownership at it's lowest % of the working age population since 1985 and renters paying on average 75% of their incomes on housing costs) but the deliberate action of elected law makers over quite a period of time. If feels good perhaps to blame the other guy for our woes, the outsider, but really it's our own guys who are responsible for the structure and operation of the jobs and housing markets we currently find ourselves with.

That's rubbish. Both are subject to supply and demand. There's an oversupply of low skilled labour, and an inflated demand for accommodation.
Both caused by too much immigration.

I don't know, what does a legal secretaries work involve and what are their bosses paying? What are the hours like? How much responsibility do 'the girls in the office' have as part of their everyday role? How many additional responsibilities are they expected to undertake, and when? What kinds of decisions are they required to make according to their job descriptions, what kinds of decisions are their line-managers asking them to make, and what kinds of decisions are they actually making, and why? What's their workload like? Are they autonomous or is their work tightly prescribed and scheduled? Are they required to update their skills at their employers request, and if so do they have to undertake this at their own expense? Are they expected to do shift work, or work evenings, nights, weekends? Is their pay fixed or calculated by the hour? Are they expected to come in on their days off or to forgo holidays to cover staff shortages and other business emergencies - and if so who covers the cost of cancelled flights or additional childcare? Are they expected to attend out-of-hours events such as training away-days, exhibitions, trade-shows, or conferences and the like, and if so are they expected to take on that work in addition to their regular responsibilities? Are they entitled to additional income for such events? Can they work overtime? Are they expected to work overtime in order to meet quotas or performance targets etc? Does their continued employment depend up them meeting quotas or performance targets? To what extent can their employer extend or limit their role and/or pay? Is there an inplace staff grievance policy, job-sharing, health benefits, pension contributions, sickness and maternity leave? I could keep this list going a long time I reckon....

I think the gender pay gap is not a myth. It's more myth science.

Allow me to explain.

Dr. Hall told me about the pervasive rot 'Tooth Fairy Science'. It sounds like science. You can count teeth taken, coins left. You can assess times of visit, several things about the tooth fairy can be examined quite scientifically.

But none of it examines whether there is a Tooth Fairy.

The gender wage gap is tooth fairy science.

Saying that women only make x percent of a man presumes that this imaginary man is some 'Fair Pay' example. No-one is getting fair pay.

There is no 'fair' to compare it to, in most cases.

Common enough in bush operations. Certainly a lot of times, they didn't send the small female pilots, because they couldn't handle the drums.

I did work for a little short of a year in my 20s on a road building gang - well our job was to collect samples of concrete, asphault and the like, take them to a lab and test them - the job involved a lot of digging, lifting and such as well as lots of fun driving 4 wheel drive vehicles over road building sites...but never mind all that.

I did exactly the same job. The testing company was Sandberg's, and the Architects were Freeman Fox, I think.
I was on the section of the M5 just south of Gloucester. Good times.

The drying ovens were great for heating up pies. I got fit doing it, but put on weight at the same time. Learn't to drive in the Landrovers onsite. Taking the clay core samples was pretty physical, you had to drive the tool in, and then dig like mad, dodging gigantic Euclids driven by mad Irishmen at the same time.
