Election (US) 2020 Thread

Post by Forty Two » Tue Feb 27, 2018 4:43 pm

Donald Trump has announced his campaign for reelection in 2020, and disclosed his new campaign manager: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-set- ... -campaign/

....and so it begins! Only 980 days 'til election day!

The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

The Silver State. 1894.

Nothing new. He only knows how to speak at rallies. He is not willing to spend his huge wealth, so his campaign will have to be a pro NRA anti abortion etc

A question for our American members. I'm assuming Trump will run again. But I assume it isn't compulsory.Have any previous presidents decided not to run for a second term?

Lyndon Johnson took over for JFK, and was elected once in 1968, but his unpopularity over Vietnam had him refrain from running for reelection. James Polk promised to serve only one term, and he didn't run for reelection.

Chester Arthur was never elected President in the first place, since he succeeded Garfield when Garfield was shot and killed. He did not run for reelection.

There were two termers, I think, who opted not to run, like Washington and Coolidge. So, they could have run for a third term, but opted not to do so. The rule against thrice being elected to the Presidency did not come until Frankie Roosevelt abused the privilege and won four elections in a row.

Thanks - looked it up after your post. I hadn't realised it was such a relatively recent amendment. It seems such a basic rule I had always assumed it was built in from the start.

Before FDR it was an unwritten custom, put in place by George Washington who fancied himself a modern day Cincinnatus, voluntarily relinquishing the reigns of power and going back to his farm.

According to his daughter Margaret, Harry Truman served so much of FDR's last term, he felt constrained by the two term custom, even though he was exempt from the Constitutional amendment's limit.
