Trump COS John Kelly thinks the US civil war was the result of a failure to compromise. He said that we can't, “take what is today accepted as right and wrong and go back and apply it back then”. Think about that for a moment. Isn't he employing that dreaded and dishonest tactic for which the reactionary right so-often criticises the progressive left - invoking cultural relativism as an excuse for withholding a moral declarative - here, the declarative that slavery is wrong? Isn't he basically saying that there was nothing wrong with slavery "back then" and therefore there should have been a compromise or an accommodation rather than a war; that if most Americans thought slavery was right then America should have been OK with slavery, and if they thought it was wrong they still should have been able to live with it?

Is the Republican Party, and those it employs and attracts, institutionally racist - or just this administration?

Well, he's not wrong, Lincoln was elected on his uncompromising stance and promise to end slavery in the Union. and that's what caused the South to secede

That, indeed, is a matter of historical fact. But Kelly made a moral statement about slavery, suggesting that there is some (unstated) compromise between the dichotomous 'slavery is wrong' and the 'slavery is right' positions.

Some more of that Trump/administration gross incompetence.

Education officials expect ‘ineffective’ Betsy DeVos to step down as her agenda collapses: report.

resident Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is “one of the most ineffective people ever to hold the job,” say some insiders, and education officials are already starting to plan for a “post-Devos landscape” when she is removed or steps down.

In a comprehensive profile, Politico said billionaire evangelical Christian DeVos has found herself stymied by the bureaucratic restraints on her job, but that bringing about change in Washington requires “time, patience and government savvy — three things she does not have.”

DeVos, said Politico’s Tim Alberta, is on a “religiously infused journey to reimagine the relationship between government, parents, teachers and schools.”

The Secretary wants to allow parents more freedom to withdraw their children from public schools and enroll them in charter schools, religious schools and private schools. What makes DeVos radical is she wants federal tax dollars to follow those children out of the public school system.

One problem with implementing her plan is that public schools receive very little of their funding from the federal government. Another is her overall unpopularity and ineffectiveness.

Not all Republicans are racists, but all racists are Republicans. To be fair to Republicans however, the Trump administration is far worse than average.

Japan paper:
Taking a page from former U.S. leader Richard Nixon, current President Donald Trump has warned China that it must do more to rein in North Korea’s nuclear ambitions or face “a big problem” with “warrior nation” Japan.

“Japan is a warrior nation, and I tell China and I tell everyone else that listens, I mean, you’re gonna have yourself a big problem with Japan pretty soon if you allow this to continue with North Korea,” Trump said during an interview on the Fox News program “The Ingraham Angle” on Thursday, a day before departing on his first Asia tour as president.

While Lincoln was opposed in principle to slavery, he did not 'promise to end slavery in the Union' during the presidential campaign of 1860. In fact, it was the efforts to prevent expansion of slavery to new US territories that led to secession by the southern states.
Though many [Republican] party members favoured the total abolition of slavery, the party pragmatically did not call for abolition in those states that already had slavery.
