That may be so, but my main intention was to put a considerable amount of pressure on muslim leaders, and the muslim community in general. I am fairly certain they could be much more effective at rooting out the dangerous jihadists within their ranks if they put their mind to it. It is in their interest anyway, because the fewer of these atrocities, the less of a back-lash there will be against Islam. The credible threat of mosque closure ramps up the incentive...

That's the rationale behind Israel blowing up the homes of families that include a terrorist or freedom fighter. They learnt that from their former persecutors who destroyed entire villages for the same reason, who in turn learnt it from others. It wasn't working then. Nothing has changed that would lead us to expect it to work now or any time in the future.

I think one of the problems is that Islam's default attitude is that any non-Islamic state is a 'bad' state. Even if the majority of their communities tolerate the secular or 'Christian' world, they do so out of inertia or lack of motivation to do much about it. Even so there is a simmering sense that they inhabit the non-Islamic world out of tolerance and perhaps against their better nature or judgement. Generalisations I know.

If I am right, it doesn't take an awful lot for the simmering resentment to bubble up into something rather nastier.

It is one reason perhaps why it seems so hard to get Islamic leaders of one sort of another to really go to town on the radicals.
