That single mom and her poor kids are the cause of so much harm in this world, we ought to have them locked up!

Who said they were the cause of any harm?

It would just be inhuman to try to keep sex offenders and wanted felons in a different room from them, right? The horror. The. Horror.

Every time I turn around they're causing problems. If they ain't dying at the hands of some crazed stoner, they're being blown to bits by terrorists!

Honestly, we should protect them and the rest of us from all the crazy by locking them up. You know it's the right thing to do.

A couple of points:

1. The sheriff's tweet didn't specify 'felony warrants,' let alone 'violent felons.'
If you go to a shelter for #Irma and you have a warrant, we'll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail.
Also,
Carrie Horstman, a spokeswoman for the office, confirmed officers would be checking IDs and will arrest those with a warrant. Horstman said it would not be possible for the officers to see what the warrant is, so it was possible some people with non-violent misdemeanor offenses could be taken into custody.

[source]
2. According to the Miami Herald, 'A Polk County ordinance says in plain language that sex offenders are banned from public hurricane shelters.' The link in the article doesn't work, and I've been unable to find any Polk County ordinance that says that 'in plain language.' I did find a Polk County ordinance restricting where registered sex offenders are allowed to reside, but it doesn't mention hurricane shelters.

I don't think they're "banned" from hurricane shelters. In my county, they just want to put them away from where the kids are. The warrant thing is probably correct. However, having a warrant out for one's arrest is fairly serious matter in the first place. And, note that Polk county is in the center of the state. We're not talking about arresting people when they're running from godzilla. With this hurricane's eye cutting right through Polk county, most people stayed at home, and most people didn't even board up their windows. It's just not an issue there. The most Polk county would get from a hurricane is some downed power and some fallen trees and such - sporadic damage here and there - maybe a small tornado or two. No matter where a cat-4 or even 5 hurricane hits, but the time it gets to polk county, it's been defanged.

It's a bit ironic that the elderly flock to Florida, a state where the elderly die without air conditioning.
http://edition.cnn.com/2017/09/14/healt ... index.html
Having said that, they were using portable AC units, but 8 still died.

I'm not surprised. The portable AC units that I've encountered make the heat worse.
Not that they make it hotter, but they increase the humidity so that it FEELS much hotter.
They could probably have saved most of those old people just by not using the portable AC.

It looks likely to me that someone might get charged with a criminal offence over it. As soon as temperatures went over a certain point, an urgent call should have been made to the emergency services.
A generator could have been sourced in a situation like that.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

No kidding. It's a completely bullshit narrative that 'in a crowded room' some perv is going to get away with anything, or even seriously consider trying to. But

is always a great excuse for bullshit.

We have motherfucking power. 6 days on generator is enough for me for one lifetime. I cannot say enough great stuff about the linesmen and utility workers - they came from as far away as California, leaving their families behind, to work through a hurricane. The guys that finally got us up and running were from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. They are Righteous Dudes of the Highest Order.

I have learned a lot from this experience and will be far better prepared for the next one, which could be a couple of weeks away if Hurricane Maria decides to visit us. For one thing, I need to wire a transfer switch directly to the main electrical panel, so the generator can power the house without need for extension cords. It's beyond my electrical skills so I'll get my neighbor to help, he's a licensed contractor and knows what he's doing.

My homemade flood defenses held, but I need to completely block up the side door to the garage. Even with the flood barrier we got a bit of water seepage.

More sandbags.

We need a dump truck load of gravel and another one of dirt. We need to re-grade the back yard to channel the water into the new French drain system.

We need another small window unit A/C. The 5000 BTU we have kept one bedroom cool, but with another larger one (9000 BTU) we'll be able to keep one half of the house at a tolerable temperature without overloading the generator.

Eventually I'll install an on-demand gas fired water heater for at least one bathroom.

I must finish installing the gutters on the sides of the house. We're guttered on the front and back, but the sides aren't. This causes a lot of water to pool where it shouldn't.

I need a portable propane burner. I used the grill for all cooking, but it's hard to boil water on a grill. A portable burner would solve that issue. Using the gas stove inside isn't really an option, it's intolerably hot to begin with and open flames only add to the misery.

You can't have too many fans.

You can't have too much gasoline. Get LOTS of containers and keep them filled.

I am so fucking glad to have a hot shower and air conditioning. SO FUCKING GLAD.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
