While agreeing on the hockey thing especially as we are often world champions. It would hard to say after a 100 years of women's sport which men's sport has had. The might not even be separate men's and women's sports. Sports could be by then just a virtual reality thing.mistermack wrote:They don't get many spectators though.
Women's football and rugby are being pushed like hell here on the BBC, but the stands are still empty.
Neymar's transfer fee of $260 million would pay for every female professional in the world.
If they want to change things for the better, stop running round like men.
They play like second-rate men, and look like second-rate men. Why would you pay to watch it?
With hockey on the other hand, I'd rather watch the women than the men.

The reason the stands are empty at women's sporting events is the ingrained, socially constructed, patriarchal and oppressive attitudes which are forced upon both men and women in our society. We are literally taught to believe the myth that women's sports are "worse" than men's sports, and that things like like speed, skill, coordination, strength, stamina and competitiveness have anything at all to do with the quality of sport. These are toxic masculinities that are only considered "good" because the historical social construction.
What needs to be done is societal attitudes need to be changed such that a slower game by weaker, slower competitors is just as exciting, if not more exciting, than a faster game played by stronger, faster competitors. It's like boxing. The reason strong, faster, harder hitting boxers are deemed "better" is because of the toxic and patriarchal culture which set up both the rules of the sport and defined our attitudes toward it. It's really just arbitrary, for example, that boxing involves punching and trying to hurt, or even knock out the other person. If the toxically masculine portions of the game were removed or modified, then women would compete just as well, if not better than the men.

Women's golf is very watchable. It's not immediately obvious that they are playing a shorter course, and they play some great stuff around the greens.
And of course, they look like women.

Men's sports is popular because it is popular. The same reason why popular music is popular or why everyone is on Facebook and not on rationalia.

Women don't go to watch sport in the same numbers. Nor are they prepared to pay the huge ticket prices that men pay. So women's sport is never going to pay much, unless it's subsidised by men't sport.NineBerry wrote:Men's sports is popular because it is popular. That's what happens at Wimbledon. Women's Wimbledon wouldn't get the same money through the gate, or the same tv sponsorship. So they make the prize money the same, by having a joint pot shared out with the men.
It's natural really. Sport is a substitute for war and conflict, and that's why it has more of a pull on men than women. The behaviour of male football fans is very obviously similar to the behaviour of male chimpanzees when they go on a raid of their neighbours.
It's not likely that women's teams will ever satisfy that instinct.
But funnily enough, women sportspeople do make lots of money endorsing beauty products and fashion.

Because people do what everyone does. Since watching sports is considered a standard male activity, that is what many men do and few women do.

Re: Are Ladies Good Sports? (split)
But why did it become considered a typically male activity in the first place? Are there any innate features of males that would tend toward such a preference?

One would have to look at the history of sports. It's possible it started at universities where women were not allowed at that time.

Re: Are Ladies Good Sports? (split)
Well, did males like sports more than females liked sports back before there were universities?
