Re: The Repository of Quotable Remarks
I don't think you do. The thread is about what women wear, to play football in.Forty Two wrote: I do get it.
In other sports, women don't choose to wear the same as the men. I gave a good example with the hockey kit.
Even good looking women look off-putting in football kit. It seems to be a deliberate policy, and I don't get it why.
They say they want to attract a crowd.
You're not going to watch women's football for the quality of the football. It's like watching a boys school game.
In many ways.
Change the kit to something a bit more female, and people might watch.

Actually, most female athletes have no chance to choose what to wear. It is decided by (mostly male) functionaries.mistermack wrote: In other sports, women don't choose to wear the same as the men.

If women want to play sport they ought to do so while dressed like women. All men will watch then. I mean, watch the sporting contest.

Yeh right. Like men would choose that women dress like men? When did that ever happen?NineBerry wrote:Actually, most female athletes have no chance to choose what to wear. It is decided by (mostly male) functionaries.mistermack wrote: In other sports, women don't choose to wear the same as the men.
Here's what women wore, when men made all the decisions :

Re: Are Ladies Good Sports? (split)
So the dress codes have changed. For men too:
One thing that has not changed is that the various committees that decide on those matters are made up of men.
Tennis clothing rules for men have changed a great deal since the game was invented. At one time men wore what almost appeared like a church clothing when playing tennis: long dress pants, dress shirt buttoned up and tucked in, often times with a sweater worn over top.

One thing that has not changed is that the various committees that decide on those matters are made up of men.

I just think that they are missing a trick. If they want equality, they need to exploit the difference. Not copy the men. That will be a losing strategy as far as crowd support goes. And at the end of the day, it's a pretty hollow victory, playing to an empty stadium.

Re: The Repository of Quotable Remarks
As long as a uniform complies with the rules of the game, it's allowed. Not sure how sex enters into it. What is there, a group of men twirling their mustaches looking to make women look bad in their uniforms? For soccer it's shorts and a jersey. What else are they going to wear? Bikinis? Thongs? Soccer uniforms don't exactly make men look all manly and sexy. They're utilitarian. Is it some conspiracy to make men unable to express their personal fashion sense?NineBerry wrote:Actually, most female athletes have no chance to choose what to wear. Re: The Repository of Quotable Remarks
So what? In soccer, they wear shorts and a jersey. Are they required to wear a skirt for you to think they're choosing? As in all matters of fashion, women tend to have more options than men, so in tennis they can wear skirts or shorts, and varying styles and designs of tops and whatnot. Men wear shorts and shirts. In soccer, they wear what they wear because it's functional for soccer. You want long socks so that a shin guard can be stuck in their. Shorts should be slightly baggy, and not too short. Etc. There is enough contact in soccer that covering most of the players' skin is helpful for falls and collisions.mistermack wrote:I don't think you do. They don't "check" in field hockey. They don't knock each other down at high speed. That's why in ice hockey, women wear hockey jerseys which are baggy and long sleeved, and they wear pants with pads, like the guys, because they're playing on ice, and they're hitting each other hard, falling down, etc. It wouldn't be practical to wear little skirts, just like it's not practical for women ice hockey players to use figure skates instead of hockey skates. The fashion is secondary to the practicalities of the game. Where the game allows more flexibility as a practical matter, then you'll find some individual variation.mistermack wrote: I gave a good example with the hockey kit.
Plus, on a team sport, a decision has to be made about what everyone wears. A tennis player isn't on a team where they have to look the same, but different than the opposing players. It's called a "uniform" because it's supposed to be uniform within the team.
Well, again, I do get it, and let me explain it to you. They aren't in a fashion show, nor are they particularly concerned with what you find attractive. They're playing in a uniform that has practical application to the sport they're involved in. One, it needs to be "uniform" so all the players are dressed the same. So, you aren't going to have one player wearing a midriff exposed top and a skirt, while the other is wearing long pants and a sleeveless shirt with a plunging neckline, while another has her whale-tale exposed over her low rider bikini bottom. You have a uniform that fits everyone and makes them look, well, uniform. And two, they aren't going for a beauty contest, so the uniform that is chosen is likely going to be one they can run well in, while protecting their skin, and being the right amount of baggy vs. tight, etc.mistermack wrote: Even good looking women look off-putting in football kit. I suspect that most of them want the crowd to come and watch them play soccer, not rub one out under their top coats while sitting in the bleachers.mistermack wrote:

Well, I disagree with that. I've watched the last three women's world cups as closely as I watched the men's and I personally find them quite enjoyable to watch. I am always very happy to see the lack of diving and faking pain/injury. The men act like pussies trying to draw fouls, and almost always there is some dipshit taking a major dive into the penalty box in an important game who manages to draw a card from the ref and a free penalty shot or direct kick that decides the match on that deception (cheating). It is every fucking men's world cup. The women play. And, it's fun to watch.mistermack wrote: You're not going to watch women's football for the quality of the football. Indeed, they are not as skilled at soccer as the men, in terms of how far they can kick, how fast they can run, and how intense they can play. However, there have been some terrific moments in women's world cup, with great set plays, fantastic headers, and really nice technical play that is fun to watch.
Well, I'm not sure that's the right way to go. One, I don't think the uniforms are "un-female." They're just shorts and shirts. Two, if there is something else you'd suggest, then be specific. If it's a miniskirt and tight shirt with no bra so the nipples show, that would wind up looking ridiculous, like the lingerie football league in the US, which really is an embarrassment (other than as a novelty, and even then, it's a bit pathetic and sad).mistermack wrote: In many ways.
Change the kit to something a bit more female, and people might watch.

Actually, when women choose their own clothes, e.g. in tennis, they never seem to choose anything like this :

And 42, that whole post is bollocks. Especially if you think that soccer clothes give protection.
This is what they could wear, if it wasn't for the unwritten rule that they have to dress like the men :
