Jared Kushner’s White House security clearance should be “re-evaluated” after the revelation that he attended a now notorious meeting with Donald Trump Jr and a Russian lawyer, according to a former White House ethics tsar.

Democratic senators were still more forceful on Wednesday, one saying of Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser: “I don’t know why he still has a job.”

Kushner is facing growing pressure over his presence at the June 2016 meeting, which email correspondence published by Trump Jr said was intended as part of a Russian government effort to damage Hillary Clinton’s election campaign.

Kushner was required to disclose all meetings with foreign government officials over the past seven years when he applied for security clearance for his White House role. He initially failed to mention the Trump Jr meeting, then included it on a supplemental form.

Norm Eisen, the former ethics tsar in Barack Obama’s administration, told the Guardian on Wednesday: “Given the nature of the meeting, it stretches credibility to say he simply forgot it when he initially filled out his forms. That puts him on the hook for false statements liability, possibly. At any rate, it increases his exposure.

“The pattern of omission by Mr Kushner and others in Donald Trump’s circle of their Russia connections increasingly points to a consciousness of guilt.”...

Of course they do. But, why? She's a Russian national and is a partner at her own law firm in Moscow. She represents clients in tax, corporate and property issues. She came to the US to assist local US attorneys in their representation of one of her clients. She was allowed "parole entry" to the US, specifically approved by the Department of Justice (Obama's DOJ) and the Immigration Service, and allowed through customs by ICE under that advance parole. While here in the US she met with many people, Democrats and Republicans, and she openly attended committee meetings in the US Congress. She was not under any suspicion or allegation at the time, and there was nothing wrong with meeting her.

If she was cleared to enter the US under "extraordinary circumstances" advance parole, without a normally required visa, by the Obama DOJ and the Obama Immigration Service, and the Obama ICE, why would it be wrong or worthy of losing security clearance for Jared Kushner to attend a meeting with her?

There is nothing wrong, incidentally, with people, even foreigners, wanting to damage Hillary Clinton's election campaign, or anyone else's election campaign. If some former government attorney has incriminating information, there's nothing wrong with disclosing it.

Because the private practice Russian attorney was not a foreign government official, and certainly wasn't known to be a foreign government official.

Or, he thought that a lawyer who was lobbying for the repeal of the Magnitsky Act, and who was representing one of the defendants in a New York civil asset forfeiture case (not appearing in the case, but serving as outside attorney), is not a government official. It doesn't stretch credulity to not list her when she's not working for the Russian government, doesn't claim to be working for the Russian government, and when the Russian government says she doesn't and didn't work for them since she left her job as a low level prosecutor in Moscow.

These laws prohibit accepting anything of value from a foreign government or a foreign national. The promised Russian “documents and information” would have been an illegal campaign contribution from a foreign government — and a priceless one.

The New York Times ran an article over the weekend about efforts by utility companies to fight the spread of rooftop-solar power:

The article chronicles how utility companies have engaged in an extensive lobbying campaign against rooftop solar at the federal and state level. These companies are big campaign donors with deep political influence. They have also been receiving assistance from the American Legislative Exchange Council and the Institute for Energy Research, two think tanks funded by the Koch family, whose sprawling company Koch Industries makes much of its money from fossil-fuel energy. With that kind of political clout, the fledgling rooftop-solar industry looks overmatched.
