Contemplate This (or That, or the Other Thing)

Post by Forty Two » Mon Jul 10, 2017 4:40 pm

“When I was in college, I took a terrorism class. ... The thing that was interesting in the class was every time the professor said ‘Al Qaeda’ his shoulders went up, But you know, it is that you don’t say ‘America’ with an intensity, you don’t say ‘England’ with the intensity. You don’t say ‘the army’ with the intensity,” she continued. “... But you say these names [Al Qaeda] because you want that word to carry weight. You want it to be something.” - Ilhan Omar

One does tend to forget..

..as one does that Americans used to salute the American flag like Nazis, which was known as the Bellamy Salute. As Nazism rose to power the American government changed the salute because pro-Nazi groups were cropping photos to make American nationalists look like Hitler supporters.

Indeed, the American Bellamy salute was similar to the Nazi salute, although it predated the Nazis by about 50 years, and had nothing to do with Nazism. After all, a peace sign can mean V-for-victory in war, or even "up yours" depending on the times or the culture. Harder to contemplate are British princesses and princes doing the Nazi salute in the 1930s, or English football teams engaging in the Nazi salute during the German national anthem in 1938.

If peanut butter cookies are made with peanut butter, then what are girl scout cookies made with?

That's fairly contemplative.

There is no such thing as nothing.

I didn't suggest it was associated with Nazism.

Here's a thing: Cleopatra lived closer in time to the moon landings than to the time of the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The jelly bean is neither made of jelly, nor is it a bean. Discuss.

I believe it's palm out for peace and victory and palm in for "up yours."

A bit deceptive, that map - the land area of the US is approximately 9,162,000 square kilometres, with Oz at 7,618,000. To my eye, adding and subtracting bits, it seems closer...
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?

It's bean-shaped and it's made of gelatine (otherwise know as 'jelly'). There is no conspiracy here. TAKE THAT, SECRET JOOS!!!
