Let Theresa May stay at No 10 for the summer, top Tories tell MPs


Senior Tories are urging MPs to back away from provoking an early leadership contest this summer, after claims that some want to see David Davis take charge.

Some MPs are keen to see Davis replace Theresa May, claiming that the prime minister is so wounded that she cannot continue in office for long and that the party should act after its disastrous election result.

However, senior figures in the party are now saying it would be a mistake to remove May too soon. Calmer heads are urging restraint, warning that it would be hard to engineer the coronation of Davis – and that unleashing a messy leadership contest could be disastrous for the party.

One senior Tory said there was frustration among a small group of MPs and junior ministers that needed to be reined in. “I’m encouraging everyone to go on holiday,” they said. “It cannot be now – there are some who want it to happen before the end of July, but it is not in the interests of the party. We need to go away, have a holiday and address it in the autumn. There are a lot of conversations going on about when she should go, not if she should go.”...

Theresa May orders Tory MP to be suspended after using N-word

Theresa May has ordered the Conservative party’s chief whip to suspend an MP who used the N-word at an event during a discussion about Brexit.

Anne Marie Morris, the MP for Newton Abbot in Devon, said sorry for causing offence with her use of the word, after a string of opposition politicians accused her of racism.

However, the prime minister decided to suspend the whip from Morris after saying the remarks were shocking and unacceptable.

The row broke out after Morris was recorded telling an event: “Now I’m sure there will be many people who’ll challenge that, but my response and my request is look at the detail, it isn’t all doom and gloom. Now we get to the real nigger in the woodpile, which is, in two years what happens if there is no deal?”

WTF? (a) Anyone with the slightest awareness that racism is a THING (as any politician claiming to represent people must surely have) and three brain cells to rub together, would have picked up somewhere along the line that it's not OK to call people niggers, along with a number of other historically-loaded racial slurs.

(b) I've never heard the term "nigger in the woodpile" before, but I'm informed that it refers to the idea of something ominous and dangerous lurking where you can't see it, ready to spring out and attack you or just generally wreak havoc on things. How can that be anything BUT a pejorative view of people of colour? How can it NOT be absolutely loaded with negative stereotypes about people of colour?

It's absolutely disgraceful. She should be thrown out of the house.

While I oppose censoring past publications I think "nigger in the woodpile" should not be used by anyone today. There are plenty of unobjectionable turns of phrase that Anne Marie Morris could have used.
