Kim is isolated, as you say. If he wants cheaper water, electricity or steal from China he has nothing to bargain with but the reported size of his dick. He's trolling in the respect that in lieu of anything else provoking OUTRAGE is the only card he can play. The situation in NK is truly appalling, and the actions of its dictatorial regime reprehensible, and you're right, the chances of a revolt are vanishingly small. Trump's mistake is to rise to the bait and to side-step the international consensus in order to appear tough for his domestic audience.Forty Two wrote:What would be the reaction if they actually bombed someone? Like Seoul or a city in Japan? Obviously, the response would have to be overwhelming. That's the problem. It would be truly awful, for the people in North Korea as well as the people in South Korea and elsewhere, and globally for the massive impact such a conflict would have on the global economy.Brian Peacock wrote:And what do you think would be the response from Russia, China, the US and the rest of the international community if NK actually tried to bomb someone? A stiffly worded letter? NK are trolling - and Trump is easily trolled - but to launch a missile at any nation would represent an existential threat only to North Korea.
Nobody on our side actually wants to blow up north Korea, so the goal is to prevent the Kim regime from starting another Korean war, like they started the first. So, this brinkmanship is all about that. The regime tries to bolster its position through convincing its opposition that any attempt to harm the regime will result in a devastating blow to the South, or others. Their goal is to put parts of the US at risk in that same way. The US goal is to isolate the Kim regime so that they know that if they do any of that, they will be annihilated, but the US does not want to annihilate them.
That kind of detente or mutually assured destruction is not a good thing, and it is inherently risky. We don't know when the Kim regime will or may reach a point of no return. They're never going to be arrested and put on trial. They'll die in a blaze of glory first. And, the more threats they can pose to foreign cities, the more they will be able to extort from their opponents and the US.
Existential threats aren't the only threats. Blowing up one city is enough. 3,000 people on 9/11/01 rocked the world economy, and started a continuing war and offshoot wars to this day. The fallout from, say, 10,000 people, or 100,000 people, from a Taepong Dong missile attack, even with conventional warheads, would be something none of us has seen, and none of us really wants to see.
It's really a bad situation, and comparing it to "trolling," in my view, minimizes the seriousness of it. Kim is not trolling. He is engaged in serious brinkmanship - geopolitical politics for keeps - laying it all on the line. He learned it from his father and grandfather, and their regime.

Re: We need to talk about Donald: the cursing & swearing thr
Trump hasn't done any of that.
But, it's not outrage that gets what Kim wants. It's threat and power. Geopolitics is based on power. The Kim regime stays in power only because it can threaten to kill a lot of people - and that threat means that his opposition would be much worse off if that happens than if it doesn't happen. That's why he wants a missile that can hit an American city. The threat of him launching it is power. That power is capital. It can buy things.
I think Trump's upping the pressure on China is one of the few options he has. I'm not sure how you're saying he's been "trolled" here. He has to do something, or the path we're on now will continue and the DPRK will get a working nuclear ICBM that can hit its target.

Running out of "reverse the Obama deal" ideas, Trump chooses to do exactly what Americans don't want, instead. Because...the Democrats! His fans?!

Trump is matching the impotent sabre rattling of Kim with sabre rattling of his own - shooting the sea off the South Korean coast. And what does Trump want China to do exactly?Forty Two wrote:Trump hasn't done any of that.

Trump supporters idiots once again:
Some Trump supporters thought NPR tweeted ‘propaganda.’ It was the Declaration of Independence.
(King George)“He has obstructed the administration of justice, by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers,” read one line of the document.
“A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people,” read another.
Some people — presumably still in the dark about NPR’s Fourth of July exercise — assumed those lines were references to President Trump and the current administration

What he'd like China to do is engineer a coup that would bring somebody reasonable to power, so that NK can become a normal country.Brian Peacock wrote:Trump is matching the impotent sabre rattling of Kim with sabre rattling of his own - shooting the sea off the South Korean coast. Shooting the sea off the South Korean coast? Do you mean the joint military exercises with South Korea? Those are planned rather far in advance.Brian Peacock wrote:Trump is matching the impotent sabre rattling of Kim with sabre rattling of his own - shooting the sea off the South Korean coast. What saber rattling? What threats have been made?
One of the things Trump wants China to do is respect the sanctions against North Korea, and cut its trade with North Korea way down. Trump wants to put pressure on China so that China puts pressure on North Korea - China has one of the closest if not the closest relationship of any country in the world with North Korea. China's 40% increase in trade with North Korea in the first quarter of 2017 doesn't really help pressure North Korea to do anything.
What he would want China to do, also, is engage in diplomatic and economic pressure against North Korea to get them to stop their missile development.

Trump's plan to cut transportation budgets will leave 220 cities without train services and affect the rural communities who voted for him and destroy loads of jobs after him promising to be a job creator.
