Grenfell Tower victims 'poisoned by cyanide' after insulation 'released highly toxic gas'

Cyanide gas released by burning insulation on Grenfell Tower could have contributed to the deaths of some of the 79 victims, it has emerged.
Boards fitted during a refurbishment of the 24-storey block might have filled homes with the highly toxic substance when they caught fire, an expert has disclosed.
They could have produced enough deadly hydrogen cyanide to fill every flat at the west London high-rise, it has been reported.
Manufacturer Celotex confirmed that the insulation would have released "toxic gases" if it caught fire.
The gas could have incapacitated some residents, but it might be impossible to establish its role in the cause of deaths due to the condition of the victims.
King's College Hospital confirmed to Sky News that three of its 12 Grenfell patients were treated with Cyanokit, the hydrogen cyanide antidote.
The insulation boards were fitted against the exterior wall of Grenfell Tower behind the cladding that was designed to improve the building's appearance and which has been blamed for speeding up the spread of the blaze.
It was made of Polyisocyanurate (PIR), which is rigid plastic foam, between two sheets of aluminium foil. The PIR itself is flammable, but the aluminium foil is designed to prevent it catching fire.

The UK and some of EU have no regulations regarding toxicity of fire smoke from building materials, apparently.

This is getting worse and worse as investigators delve more and more into this catastrophe.

A very good point and one I have often pondered when I visit and more or less open my pockets so that money can fall out as I walk about. Everything costs a lot!

Social housing - no doubt anathema to yourself, is however subsidised.

I don't have a problem with subsidized housing, I do have a problem with using expensive city real estate worth hundreds of thousands to house the poor. Sell and tear down the council houses for the poor in London, use that huge amount of cash to build houses in cheaper rent areas. Then the middle class that actually works in these cities would be able to afford to live there.

Scotland Yard mull manslaughter charges over Grenfell Tower blaze

LONDON (AFP) -
Manslaughter charges could be filed over London's deadly tower blaze, police said Friday after finding that outside cladding had failed safety tests and that the fire started with a faulty fridge.
"We are looking at every criminal offence from manslaughter onwards," Fiona McCormack from London's Metropolitan Police said at a briefing on the June 14 blaze in west London, which left 79 people presumed dead.
Referring to the tiles and insulation on the outside of the building, which have been widely blamed for the rapid spread of the flames, she said: "All I can say at the moment is they don't pass any safety tests."
The cladding was installed on the 24-storey council-owned Grenfell Tower, which was built in 1974, as part of a refurbishment completed last year.
It has prompted a wider review of social housing which has identified at least 600 towers in England with similar cladding.
McCormack said police had also established that the fire started with a faulty fridge, a Hotpoint FF175BP model.
She said the model had not been subject to any product recall.
McCormack said police were investigating companies involved in the building and refurbishment of the tower, and possible "health and safety and fire safety offences".
