General Election UK, June 8th...
Re: General Election UK, June 8th...
What I suspect (wishful thinking mode) is that if the total votes for the SDP and Labour (plus any others) attain a working majority (and agree to work together - I think this has been intimated), then Brexit will be abandoned.

Maybe watered down a bit but they can't formally reverse the decision. It would be a blatant slap in the face to the electorate who idiotically voted to leave.

I think many of those who voted to leave now realise that they were deceived and lied to and that they were not told the complete story.Rum wrote:It would be a blatant slap in the face to the electorate who idiotically voted to leave.
As far as I'm concerned a voting public that has been deceived and lied to has no mandate - except for those politicians who carried out the lying and deceiving.

Re: General Election UK, June 8th...
There's certainly every reason for a referendum on the final deal. But that's exactly why the Conservatives' vote isn't dropping below 40%, - people think May is the only one able to guarantee that Brexit will definitely happen. I think there's a certain stubbornness amongst the pro-Brexit demographic that after all the shit with the first referendum they now just want to see it through no matter what the cost. If Brexit wasn't on the table I'm pretty sure the Tories would be polling somewhere in the twenties given how much of a shambles they've made. The election is going to depend massively on turnout of different groups. One thing that could swing it for Labour is if the pro-Bexit demographic is less enthusiastic about this general election than they were about the referendum. Either way May has politically shot herself in the foot if the Tories gets anything less than a fifty seat increase, - because she's shown herself to be nasty, cowardly, robotic and likely to u-turn, and wasted the whole country's time for no real reason.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Re: General Election UK, June 8th...
Mrs May and the right-leaning press roundly condemned Corbyn for 'politicising' the Manchester bombing when he spoke about it four days later. Today she suspended election campaigning, along with Labour and the Libdems, and then spoke about last night's attack in London, saying: “Defeating this ideology is one of the great challenges of our time. But it cannot be defeated through military intervention alone. It is time to say enough is enough. Everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. Our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. But when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to change.”Brian Peacock wrote:Corbyn today: "Many experts, including professionals in our intelligence and security services, have pointed out the connections between wars our government has supported or fought in other countries, such as Libya, and terrorism here at home. That assessment in no way reduces the guilt of those who attack our children. Those terrorists will forever be reviled and implacably held to account for their actions. Protecting this country requires us to be both strong against terrorism and strong against the causes of terrorism. The blame is with the terrorists, but if we are to protect our people we must be honest about what threatens our security. We must be brave enough to admit that the 'war on terror' is not working. We need a smarter way to reduce the threat from countries which nurture terrorists and generate terrorism.”
The Daily Mail: Theresa May lashes Jeremy Corbyn for saying Manchester attack is 'our fault'
The Daily Telegraph: Revealed: Jeremy Corbyn's three decades of blocking terror legislation
The Evening Standard: Jeremy Corbyn accused over 'inappropriate and crassly timed' speech on terror
The Daily Express: Theresa May rages at Corbyn at G7 as she blasts ‘there is NEVER an excuse for terrorism’
Somebody's worried.
Double-standards.

Rude Britannia: Mysterious effigy of UK PM May says 'up yours' to Europe
A giant scaffold bearing the image of British Prime Minister Theresa May appeared on the cliffs of Dover on Monday, complete with a Union Flag skirt and a rude hand gesture indicating to the rest of Europe that it should go away.
The iconic row of white cliffs along Britain's south coast is the closest British landmark to continental Europe and the first sign of England that many sea-faring visitors see.
