Re: Guvment Diet
The thing is for me is those foods dont hide anything. They are straight forward foods (except frikandel and you dont want to know what is in it). Boterkoek is horrendous in nutritional value. Usually you only eat a small piece.
The problem with fast foods is what is actually in them and all the sauces they throw over them. You just dont know what your are eating.

Re: Guvment Diet
Lunch-shaming in schools has no place in the battle against child poverty
Being poor is about far more than lacking money or resources. To be poor is also to be shunned and stigmatised. “Lunch shaming”, where children in some school districts in the US who can’t afford a hot meal are publicly humiliated, in some cases by being made to clean canteen tables in front of other pupils to pay off their food debt, was thrust into the spotlight recently when the state of New Mexico passed a landmark law outlawing the practice. The law, spearheaded by local anti-poverty groups, is a welcome rebuttal to such callous practices...

Re: Guvment Diet
The Dutch guy who hates everything talked about banning fast food. I made the point of comparing fast food to supermarket food - using the example of Church's chicken vs. Purdue chicken. Alan B jumped into that exchange, so the conversation at that time was about banning - whether fast food should be banned.pErvin wrote:Who, other than you and the Dutch guy who hates everything, is talking about banning?Forty Two wrote:That is, of course, a different issue than banning.Alan B wrote: It is the governments job to insist that food manufacturers declare the nutrition in their products, the rest is down to education, education, education.
I don't give a flying fuck what you want to talk about. You're interfering with the conversation, as usual, with this fuckwittery about "who is talking about banning besides you and the Dutch guy." It was me and the Dutch guy who were talking about banning. If that's not what you want to talk about, then fucking talk about something else which is relevant to the topic. Your usual bullshit about whose talking about what and whether they said something in exactly the words you'd prefer they use is just your way to fuck with a thread and troll people.
What was his proposal? That the butcher wrap the meat in a package that "reminds you that ten trees, or whatever, were killed in order for you to have the meat?" LOL. That's the "addition of information labels on meat" that you are referring to? That has something to do with the safety or nutrition of the food? LOL.pErvin wrote:Except you objected to Hermit's proposal for the addition of informative labels on meat. And, whatever one thinks of the nutrition labels, they are present and provide plenty of information for people to know what they're getting.
Of course I object to that. It's so absolutely asinine it hardly bears mention.

Re: Guvment Diet
LOL - hyperbole - coming from folks who think my donut shop legislation proposal was perfectly reasonable, the suggestion that cigar banning and marijuana banning, etc., is "hyperbole" is rather rich. Of course it's hyperbole! That's what the donut shop example was - something so ridiculous that everyone should have been like, "of course we don't support that - that donut shop law would be plain stupid and way over the top." But, no, some folks on the thread were of the mind that such a regulation would be just fine.pErvin wrote:Yet more hyperbole. You just can't help yourself, can you? No one is talking about banning casinos. Your own term was "de-glorification".Forty Two wrote:Get rid of everything!Hermit wrote:Yes. Unfortunately governments, at least in Australia, are dragging the chain on this because they get a huge cut of the proceeds.Forty Two wrote:A rational application of the "stop what's bad for them" government policy would likely include the de-glorification of casinos, right?
Cigars! Gone!
Marijuana! Gone!
Heck - let's just have the government tell us what we can and can't eat, drink and inhale, and tell us how far we can run, and what sports we can play, because the government is an expert on safety and it's for our own good.
That's not something related to the meat. It's not necessary for ranchers in the US, for example, to cut down trees to make meat. The loss of trees is a result of deforestation in the Amazon to make way for farming and ranching there.pErvin wrote:To inform the consumer. As I said, you free market types are supposed to be for the free flow of information. But I guess this is like the "free speech" argument. All for free speech that you lot like, but when it's some muslim woman saying something offensive to white males, it's out the window with the free speech rhetoric. What other reason is there to "remind" you that ten trees have been chopped down for you to be able to eat it? To honor and praise the trees?Hermit wrote:You hear the sound wrongly and where do you get the idea from that I want to drag guilt into the matter?Forty Two wrote:That sounds like a personal problem for you. You might seek therapy. You think you should be made to feel guilty for buying and eating meat, and that should be legislated, and that's a proper role for the government?Hermit wrote:Now to meat. Though I am not a vegetarian, I'd approve of butchers wrapping the steak I buy in a package which reminds me that ten trees have been chopped down, or whatever, in order for me to be able to eat it.
Why would the tree data (which is not undisputed anyway) be what's on the label? Why not the information on the number of trucks used to haul meat around the country? Why not the number of cows killed? Why not pictures of cows getting killed for their meat, and guts hanging out, to "inform the consumer?"
This thread is about diet - and labels on food generally relate to nutrition information, not how much gasoline is burned, or how many trees are estimated to be cut down because the industry is expanding.
And as for free speech and Muslim women saying things offensive to white males, when have I ever suggested they not be allowed to say whatever they want? The answer is never, so go fucking talk to whoever is telling you otherwise. Muslim women have every right to be as offensive as they want toward white people and even engage in hate speech. If some lady says she wants white men dead through torture, that's her right. How's that for free speech?
And aren't you in favor of a free market? I thought you were - but, maybe not. What are you for then, if not a free market? (note, free market has never meant, to anyone besides an anarchist or anarcho-capitalist, of which there are about .03 people per 100,000 in the world, "absolutely no laws regarding the market -- capitalism, in the textbook sense, REQUIRES government to exist).

Re: Guvment Diet
Jeez - never heard of such a practice in all my life.Brian Peacock wrote:Lunch-shaming in schools has no place in the battle against child poverty
FFS, what the fuck is so hard about lunch. Just feed the kids who want to buy lunch. Whatever happened to brown-bagging it? When I was a kid, you went to school with a brown lunch bag, with a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and maybe a thermos of soup and/or a drink.
Cleaning tables is not per se bad, for kids that are over the age of, say, 7 or 8 -- but, it shouldn't be based on working off a debt. It's not the kids' debts, it's the parents. But, alternating on a fair basis for all kids to clean up after themselves would be a great thing.
I am a bit sick of the world "shaming" being applied to everything. The school employees should be ashamed of themselves for stamping crap on the kids' arms. I wonder how widespread that practice was, if it was school policy, or if it was asshat employees taking matters into their own hands. If it's school policy, then a principal or superintendent needs to go.
If the school is going to provide lunch, then provide the fucking lunch, and stop nickel and diming this shit. It's the parents' primary responsibility to feed their kids, but being behind a few dollars in lunch money is no reason to throw food away instead of giving it to the kids. Send a bill to the parents. Add late charges.

I didn't realize that trees grew so fast that every time I have a steak they have to cut down ten of them. Like bloody weeds, those things. They must take pictures like these after clear cutting:

Re: Guvment Diet
Is it really too much? Has it really come to this? The fucking kids are in school for, like, six hours, maybe 7 if you include travel to and from, and you can't get them a fucking bite to eat? That's too much to manage?
And the schools - they're collecting, like, $2-2.50 per day for lunch, and this is such an issue that they're branding kids with ink stamps to tell their parents to pay up? FFS, just send a god damn note home. How far behind are they going? $50? Criminy. Call them in for a conference and ask them what the fuck is going on, and if they can't pay make them fill out financial assistance forms.
I realize it sounds like the Yorkshiremen ,but come the fuck on. Maybe we actually have reached the point where the grousing older generation is right, and things are just fucked.
Are parents really sending their kids into school with no lunch and no means of acquiring it? That's another issue. You're a fucking parent. I get it that there can be slip ups on an isolated basis, but sending the kid to school with the means to eat is pretty fucking high up on the list of things to remember. And, it's a pretty easy problem to solve. Stick a fucking sandwich in a bag and they'll make it home alive, or hand them fucking $3 to get something. If the parent is working, then they have three fucking dollars. If they're a single mom, they get financial assistance and EBT to buy plenty of food. If there are two fucking parents working, then they can afford the $3. If one parent is staying home there must be a piece of food in the fridge, for fuck sake.

-dunno, I'm skeptical
If your parents receive any kind of assistance then you qualify for free school lunches. If you don't have a lunch then you get a sandwich, or you can buy a lunch and your parents get billed. Some schools even have an after school meal, and meals during the summer months.
I used to eat free lunches at one high school I attended, they shamed us by making us "pay" at a different register with our food card.

My friend's 10yo daughter starts senior school in September. My friend is not very well-off so she gets assistance - free meals, free uniform etc. My friend was told by the school not to discuss this with her daughter in order to prevent this being discovered by the other pupils and victimised.

Just give everybody a free goddamn meal. Fire a few thousand useless, middle management "administrators" to pay for it. FFS, the amount of property taxes I pay would feed 50 fucking kids three meals a day for a year. The public school system in the U.S. (or at least here in Florida) is a clusterfuck boondoggle of Brobdingnagian proportions. We spend billions a year and have kids graduating high school who can't fucking read. It's a scam.

Re: Guvment Diet
And, yet, I've been reading article after article lately where teachers are rebelling against the overly-demanding school system. They want to stop assigning homework, because kids are just doing too much schoolwork, and they don't get enough play time. LOL. However, significant portions of the student body are borderline illiterate when entering college, and now the colleges are dumbing down curricula to protect the feelings of ill-prepared students.laklak wrote:Just give everybody a free goddamn meal.
