Whether the cruise missile strike was motivated by the desire to prevent the use of gas on innocent civilians is questionable. On the technical side you can't prevent what has already been done. I suppose you could regard the hail of cruise missiles as possibly preventing future use of Sarin gas, but I don't think highly enough of any government to think they might act on purely ethical or moral grounds. Syria has been a proxy war for quite some time now. All Syrian deaths are mere collateral damage.
