Edif Piaf and the Nazis ??

Post by cronus » Sun Mar 19, 2017 12:56 pm

Having seen that movie which totally neglected World War Two and the Nazis/Vichy regime in Edif's life I'm trying to piece together what really happened from opinions on the web - some say she was a collaborator and then there's some says she was second only to Schindler for saving Muslims/Jews and so forth. So what is the truth here? What is your take on the truth? Is there any truth?
What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?

Apparently Richard Strauss was a Nazi too.

Yes, he was. Actually we an antisemite before Hitler and probably has influenced Hitler's antisemitism.

Very harsh on Strauss, who collaborated minimally with the Nazis in order to keep his Jewish relatives out of the concentration camps (successfully).

While being a Nazi makes you automatically anti-Semitic, the reverse is not true, so there is no need for you to support your bald assertion with actual evidence, which at best would be somewhat spotty. To call Strauss a Nazi is stretching the bow beyond breaking point. He never joined the NSDAP and he never did a Hitler salute. He insisted on formally crediting Stefan Zweig for writing the libretto for his comic opera, Die schweigsame Frau, which was banned after three performances. In 1935 he noted in his diary: "I consider the Jew-baiting by Goebbels a disgrace to German honour." At worst you can accuse him of being too passive in regard to the Third Reich. The Nazis certainly found him insufficiently cooperative. Less than two years after making him (without prior communication on the matter) president of the Reichsmusikkammer they sacked him from that office. Unlike Kurt Weill (among others), Strauss was under the illusion that art could be isolated from politics. Very likely any impulse to more explicitly oppose would have been stymied by the fact that his daughter-in-law and his grandchildren were Jewish. It was his international fame and reputation as a composer as well as a conductor that protected them - as long as he would not publicly say what he privately thought about the regime.

His success was limited to his immediate family. Jewish relatives beyond his daughter-in-law and grandchildren did not benefit from his influence.

I confused Strauss with Wagner with regard to the antisemitism part.

Is doing what the blocke pointing the gun at you tells you to collaboration?

Edif Piaf might have helped the Nazi propaganda machine, but she had no regrets. :tea:

No surprise there. You're all looking at us through the same lens.
