My daughter wants to wear a poncho, like were popular in the 70s. I had to sit her down and educate her on the evil nature of her desires in that regard. Wearing a poncho would be cultural appropriation of a Mexican fashion tradition. I explained to her that as a white person, even though many Mexicans and other hispanics are white, she's a racist, and she is using her privilege to oppress Mexicans when she wants to wear a poncho. I made sure to clarify, of course, that as a female, she's very much oppressed by the patriarchal , capitalist, white, male, heteronormative patriarchy. She said that "boys don't go to my ballet class, silly!" So, I gave her a good talking to to make sure she knew that there was no such thing as boys and girls -- just persons who self-identify as a point along the gender spectrum from "none" to "all" and that she has no idea which of the children in her ballet class were "boys" and "girls," if any. Heck, I told her, even if each child in her class told her what they identified as, she still cannot assume that what they told her is correct, since some of the children are bound to have been oppressed by the patriarchal, capitalist, white, male, heteronormative culture into believing they are one gender when they may be another, and others might be self-hating due to such oppression and may not be honest about their true selves.
