I didn't read the article, so I don't know what the reasoning for us pessimistic aussies is. But I could guess it's climate change. We are at the pointy edge of it here (like in Africa too, I'd imagine).

One of the only 4% of UKians who think the world is getting better. Then again, I only read the Tory press for reference rather than to get the news or to tell me what my opinions should be this week.

The numbers tell only half the truth. Were is the information on what percentage thinks the world stays the same? 41% of China thinks the world is getting better, only 4% of Germany thinks so. But what if 59% of China thinks the world is getting worse and only 4% of Germany thinks the world is getting words, but over 90% of Germany thinks that the world just stays the same old garbage!

We're living through an unprecedented period of peace and economic stability in terms of the history of our species. It's really not difficult to take that all for granted when it's the weft and weave of our civilisation, but peace and stability have been hard fought and are precious and fragile. I wish those who'd like to send 'them foreigners' back to their war-torn hell holes would acknowledge how incredibly lucky they've been and that they can do their bit for peace and openness by being peaceful and open towards those seeking a better life in the bosom of civilisation - if you want to make an enemy then treat someone without kindness, compassion or fairness, consign them to suffering and slap them down when they need help. The doom-and-gloom merchants and the hell-in-a-handcart brigade are generally wealthy middle-aged people embittered by a lifetime of bad emotional choices and depressed by the prospect of their approaching deaths. It's irresponsible to foist this on everybody else, particularly the young, by constantly holding their own whinging dissatisfaction and disappointment up as the norm. I'd tell those people to get themselves some MDMA, and have a wank once in a while - though not on a bus in the queue at the post office.
