Will the US states become like countries?
With Trump and libertarians dismantling government programs, the US may end up resembling the EU. Liberal states could go the liberal way just by raising taxes and taking over federal tasks. As federal tax is lowered, as well as the programs they funded, the states could easily raise tax.
Most states have income tax of 5% or less.

End of the Roman Empire. Borders will form, reserve currency status lost and reveal the true economic and social dysfunction. It'll be a mess but a contained one.
What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?

Unlikely the reserve currency will change in a mere 8 years. But the euro will gain a more equal status.

Trump will encourage trade barriers between the US and everywhere else. It'll all happen pretty quick after the US-Iran war.Tero wrote:Unlikely the reserve currency will change in a mere 8 years. But the euro will gain a more equal status.

Seems to me they already have a great deal of autonomy. I have read, for example, that although the Ignoramuses who are due to take over your country shortly tend to deny the reality of climate change, pretty much all the States are following good alternative energy plans, for economic and empirical reasons. Let's hope they go their own way in all sorts of ways while Donald Twat is in power.

Big difference is that the states cannot levy income taxes, and all the forms of state revenue raisings (land tax, fuel excises, stamp duties and so on ) are essentially flat.JimC wrote:A degree of the same tension exists between the federal and state governments in Oz...

Tack on Freedom to anything and you know it just means Republicans and "small government". Rand Paul and Paul Ryan can't wait to cut all entitlements. Even ones you, or I paid for for 40 years.
Paul has been banging the drum recently for taking on entitlements. In an interview with FreedomWorks’ Jason Pye, he stated that President-elect Trump has said he’s not interested in taking on entitlements, and that failing to do so makes him believe a balanced budget isn’t a real concern, stating “I just don’t think you’re a fiscal conservative, or you’re serious about the significance of the $20 trillion debt.”

Some odd wording though:DRSB wrote:Yes! They will!

"Recant their non-beliefs", surely...The Act also condemns “specific targeting of non-theists, humanists, and atheists because of their beliefs” and attempts to forcibly compel “non-believers or non-theists to recant their beliefs or to convert.”
