Lidl gravy granules found to contain paint thinner chemical

Unsafe levels of a paint thinner chemical have been found in gravy granules sold at Lidl, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has said.
The contamination affected two batches of Kania Gravy Granules, which were found to contain xylene.

Customers have been advised not to eat the products, and return them to the supermarket for a full refund.
Lidl has said it takes the issue "very seriously" and is working with its supplier to identify the cause.
An alert from the FSA said exposure to xylene in food products posed a health risk.

"The contaminant levels in this [gravy granules] product exceed those set to minimise this risk and the product is therefore being recalled as a precaution," the FSA said.
Xylene is a petrochemical used as a solvent in products such as paints and inks.

Exposure can cause irritation of the mouth, throat, nose and lungs and in severe cases lead to heart problems, liver and kidney damage and coma, according to Public Health England.
The products affected are 300g packets of Kania Gravy Granules for meat and for chicken with best before dates of October and November 2017.
Other Kania products are not affected by the recall.

Lidl will display notices in all stores that sold the products, and customers are being urged to return the granules for a full refund.
A spokeswoman for Lidl said: "We were very sorry to hear of this matter and can confirm that an investigation was launched as soon as we were made aware.

"We are taking the issue very seriously and are working closely with our supplier to identify the cause."

Yeah, same old Germans throwing their hands, apologising, and looking to resolve the problem as soon as possible. Nice to see the Daily Mail reminding those who didn't know that high exposure can lead to heart problems, liver and kidney damage, and coma - so take note all you gravy quaffers out there; yeah, you know who you are.

They got caught. This wasn't a noble gesture of remorse. :coffee:

Yeah, Lidl "got caught" selling stuff they assumed was OK, until it wasn't, when they removed it from the shelves and put up notices in store asking for returns. Lidl will deal with the retail issue and the manufacturers will deal with the manufacturing issue, and the law will deal with the legal issue. But to imply that they tried to get away with poisoning UK consumers, and would have knowingly continued to do so if they hadn't been 'caught', and that this somehow typifies a specifically German trait or characteristic, is pretty weak.

Crumple can't get Dunkirk out of his head, so he thinks the same must be true of Germans and the Battle of Britain. He's forgetting that Germany has moved on. Wirtschaftswunder, and all that, while 1942 was Great Britain's last glorious moment. The poms were still running around with ration books just over nine years after VE day. By then the biggest problems for Germans were how to decide whether to buy an Opel or a Volkswagen, and whether they should spend their holidays skiing around January in Bavaria or wait six months and spend a few weeks at a beach in Sylt.

That's poms for you. They never shut up about World Cup '66 for chrissake! You never hear Germany going on and on about the four times they won.

Ah, the World Cup. It goes like this: Teams from over a hundred nations compete. 16 finalists duke it out for the benefit of Coca Cola and other big sponsors. Then the Germans win with a team consisting of ten defenders and a goalie. It's too predictable to get excited about.

Chemicals probably planted in the product by Aldi.

It's already there, and it is really simple; Adding water to powders and stirring makes them finally a solution.

I love Lidl. The have the most cheerful and obliging staff, even if they do stock children's lunch boxes next to family packs of rat poison. Considering that most of the staff are probably on the minimum wage their disposition speaks to a good management culture. Not like the grump sods at Sainsburys, in their shit-brown and orange umpalumpah outfits.

Technically incorrect. It would be both a solution and a suspension, with the poisonous xylene probably absorbed into small colloidal particles... :tea:

Technical schmecknical. I was dumbing it down for the usual suspects.

The reaction between Protium Hydroxide and Xylene would probably be an emulsion.
