#Rio2016 : All Things Olympian

Post by Brian Peacock » Fri Aug 05, 2016 5:31 pm

Just heard on the news that a large sporting event is due to begin in Brazil today.

:D

Personally looking forward to all the Equestrian events, Judo, Taekwondo, Free-style wrestling, Fencing, Archery, Beach Volleyball, and the ladies Weightlifting (one can't help but admire a great snatch).

I haven't watched the Olympics since, I don't know, since they competed with The African Queen for ratings.

I like the track events, and boxing can be pretty good too.

I watched the highlights of the opening ceremony. I learned something too, apparently the rainforest is under threat from dancers.

As the teams of athletes were led into the Maracanã, they were preceded by a tricycle bearing the name of their country.

As many people noticed, this meant that the team for Saudi Arabia was rather awkwardly following the lead of a woman driver.

A slightly unusual thing to look out for in the swimming later today (the first heats begin at 1pm in Rio, 5pm BST): the world’s elite swimmers will be watched over by lifeguards. “It is a Brazilian law that any public pool over a certain size has to have lifeguards,” Ricardo Prado, the sport manager for aquatics, told Reuters. “We wish we didn’t have them either [at the Games] but we have to have them.”

I'm watching the road race now. Two good Aussie contenders - Richie Port and Rowan Dennis. I've only just turned it on. Not sure who else is in it. I don't think Chris Froome (winner of the Tour de Svarty a few weeks ago) is there.

Eeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaayyyyyyyeeeeeeaaarrrrggghhhh!!!

They played it again and again in slow motion from every camera angle, and I was like, "Nooooooooooo!! I don't want to see that!!" but I couldn't not look.

I caught up with the Epee competition yesterday. Fantastic women's semi-final and final.
