New study confirms that 80 percent of Americans support labeling of foods containing DNA.

33 percent of respondents believe that non-GMO tomatoes do not contain any genes, and 32 percent think that vegetables have no DNA. Our vegetables would be blissfully free of DNA if not for the nefarious corporations who maliciously insert it into the food supply!

Suggestion for an adequate warning:

"WARNING: This product contains deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The Surgeon General has determined that DNA is linked to a variety of diseases in both animals and humans. In some configurations, it is a risk factor for cancer and heart disease. Pregnant women are at very high risk of passing on DNA to their children."

That's a pretty simplistic analysis, and US-centric where corporate farming is the norm. Organic in other parts of the world is a whole different proposition. I addressed some of these issues in some thread in response to Coito, who then abandoned the thread because he couldn't discuss the issue without just repeating soundbites like that article presents.

to be clearer, the problem isn't that organic isn't a laudable pursuit. It's that it is done in a terrible way in the US (and probably increasingly in other places).

The author mocks the ignorance of the masses, yet comes up with this gem:

Dimbulb doesn't know the difference between nucleotides (which are 'building blocks') and polynucleotides (wherein the sequence holds the genetic information).

The "organic" is being thrown around to such an extent that there is no escape. The local shop near my home, which is the equivalent of Tesco, sells only bio, you cannot buy anything else. The logic is what Nassim Taleb calls "How a stubborn obstinate minority converts the majority": people that do not insist on organic would make do if there is no other choice but not the other way round, so sell organic, everybody is happy! You cannot offer a diversity to satisfy all tastes, so offer the minority choice, sell kosher soda, the non-koshers will buy it as well. This kind of conversions happens also with religions.

Not my impression. It is expanding to suppress the non-organic one. 70% of the mutton sold in GB is halal. Why? Easier to sell because non-halals will buy it just as the halals who would not buy non-halal mutton. Very sound business logic, actually!
