The percentage of Muslims who agree with establishing a worldwide caliphate and engaging in Jihad to do so is staggering. Many may not act, but they will certainly support. This makes sense though, since that's what the Koran tells Muslims to do. In the American Revolution, it only took 3% of Americans to stand up and fight against the British. You don't need that many people. You just need their support. The fact is, the more Muslims there are, the more Jihad you will see.

It's no more or less political than most religions. If Christianity was able to be pulled into line to a degree, then it should be possible with Islam. In any case, you can't extinguish ideologies. So reform of it is the only option.

Obviously, a good strategy in my opinion is while embracing moderate strains, call out the fundamentalists on their humanity and have the security forces work against the terrorists. But don't do it to overtly so that there isn't the impression moderate strains weren't authentic but created by the evil West.

Meeky, don't misunderstand me. I'm an atheist, so Islam is clearly deluded. I accept that there are inherent features of its belief systems and holy writings that are more dangerous than other religions. For a variety of reasons, it is also the religion currently most likely to have some of its adherents commit violence in its name.

However, most of those identifying as muslims (at least in the west) do not subscribe to a paranoid's fantasy of subjugating the world; they just, as most people do, want to get on with their lives. As rEv said before, what does your view of Islam lead you to do to muslims in general as a matter of policy?

For me, they definitely need to, for their own sake, keep authorities informed of the violent fundamentalists in their midst, and simply need to accept that they will inevitably face a higher degree of surveillance than other groups. Beyond that, if they are obeying the laws of the land, they get treated no differently to equally deluded anglicans...

The best weapon against islam in the west is education.
People seem to have this illusion that muslims in European countries remain muslims. They dont. Here there are so many programmes in place to help muslims and prevent the radicalisation also anyone leaving islam get full support and protection.
In Europe there has been two ways of approaching the muslim community 1. just dump them and leave them to it (the French and Belgium methods along with Britain of course but it has other problems) 2. get involved in muslim communities make sure that ghetto's dont form. Keep up a constant dialogue. Here in Utrecht an organisation set up by muslim mothers is having great success and now being rolled out in the other major cities. The strict language and citizenship exams which are compulsory for all non-EU citizens makes it awkward for those looking for an easy place to lay their head.
Failure of these exams is a return ticket home.

He was treated really well, welcomed and made to feel at home. So much for the chances of educating them or westernising them. Some will, but many will not.
